Summary: Northeastern is seeking a dedicated Industrial Hygienist to join the Office of Academic and Research Safety team. This role will play a critical part in supporting the university’s mission of providing a safe, healthy, and compliant environment for students, faculty, researchers, and staff. The Industrial Hygienist will lead initiatives and programs related to exposure assessment, ventilation evaluation, respiratory protection, and other occupational health programs in a complex and diverse academic research setting across multiple campuses. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, Physical Science or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in industrial hygiene, preferably in a university, or research environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ventilation systems, exposure monitoring equipment, and occupational health regulations.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Physical requirements include being medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs and moving up to 500 lbs of materials using rolling carts or drum carts.
  • Work areas include a variety of physical environments including weather extremes, mechanical spaces, potential confined spaces, elevated locations, and where the use of hazardous materials (chem, rad, bio) or equipment is in storage or use.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or willingness to obtain certification (within 2-5 years of employment).
  • Experience managing a respiratory protection program.
  • Experience managing Laboratory Ventilation Management Program.
  • Advanced degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health, or related discipline.
  • Experience working in academic laboratories or other research-intensive environments.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the program lead for the university’s Laboratory Ventilation Management Program (LVMP), including program management, testing, training, and oversight for multiple campuses.
  • Plan and conduct exposure monitoring for chemical, biological, and physical hazards in laboratories, shops, and makerspaces.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory industrial hygiene programs.
  • Manage and maintain IH equipment as well as assist in updating IH equipment inventory control, set-up, calibration, use, and analysis guides.
  • Evaluate local exhaust ventilation systems (fume hoods, snorkels, dust collection, specialized exhaust, etc.) for performance and compliance.
  • Support the program administrator for the university’s Respiratory Protection Program, including fit testing, training, and program administration.
  • Perform risk assessments, recommend control measures, and advise stakeholders on best practices to reduce exposures.
  • Support regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, NFPA, ANSI, and other applicable standards.
  • Partner with Facilities, Research Compliance, and academic departments to resolve ventilation and exposure-related concerns.
  • Prepare reports, maintain monitoring data, and communicate findings clearly to diverse stakeholders.
  • Assist with training, outreach, and educational initiatives on occupational health topics.
  • Participates in the OARS Emergency Response Program on a rotating basis as a cross-trained OARS Responder.
  • Will be required to carry a cell phone and occasionally respond to emergencies during non-business hours.
