About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Industrial Hygienist to work in our Environment, Health, Safety and Quality department supporting Research & Development (R&D) in Energy, Environment, Science and Technology, Nuclear Science and Technology, and National and Homeland Security directorates. Our team follows a 9x80 schedule, with every other Friday off. The position primarily supports Idaho Falls facilities, but some support will also be provided to programs/projects located on the desert site. This position will develop, implement, and maintain programs to prevent or correct unsafe acts and unsafe working conditions, reduce or eliminate chemical and physical workplace hazards, and reduce or eliminate employee injury in R&D. Ensures compliance with 10 CFR 851, “DOE Worker Safety and Health Program” through company procedures and policies, which incorporate OSHA regulations and other consensus standards. This position will report to the R&D Occupational Safety and Health Manager.

Requirements

  • Level 3: Bachelor of Science in Industrial Hygiene or related degree recognized by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC) plus (5) years of IH experience or MS in IH or related degree and (2) years of IH experience.
  • Level 4: Bachelor of Science in Industrial Hygiene or related degree recognized by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC) plus (9) years of IH experience or MS in IH or related degree and (6) years of IH experience.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “Q” clearance which requires US citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Experience/Education in Industrial Safety.
  • Previous laser safety experience or ability to complete laser safety officer qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Apply a full and comprehensive understanding and application of industrial hygiene (IH) principles, theories, and concepts needed to support complex work activities.
  • While the primary focus of this role is industrial hygiene, the successful candidate will also be expected to obtain internal qualifications and take on responsibilities related to industrial safety as part of their core duties.
  • Perform IH Exposure Assessments (EAs) and sampling activities to characterize employee exposures to hazardous agents and communicate results to management and employees.
  • Conduct field assessments, including area/job walk-downs.
  • Evaluate the implementation of company industrial hygiene and safety programs and policies.
  • Interact with research personnel and laboratory managers on complex IH and safety matters requiring critical thinking and coordination between organizations.
  • Implement programs, policies, and procedures associated with the recognition, measurement, evaluation, and control of chemical, physical, and biological health hazards.
  • Communicate industrial hygiene and safety program and policy requirements as they apply to planned or existing R&D project or program activities.
  • Identify and analyze hazards associated with work activities and establish appropriate hazard controls and mitigations for identified hazards.
  • Assist in the development of R&D project or program work control and procedure documents.
  • Enable research activities while ensuring they are conducted safely.
  • Serve as an R&D Laser Safety Officer (LSO), including annual inspection of class 3B and 4 lasers.
  • Provide technical support and information to line management, including support on complex industrial hygiene and industrial safety issues.
  • Provide input to R&D project-specific industrial hygiene and safety goals and initiatives.
  • Assist management and employee safety team members on accident investigation and root cause analysis in accordance with company procedures.
  • Serve as a team leader while managing multiple tasks for projects with increasing scope and risk.
  • Other duties as assigned.
