About The Position

Interns assist Natural Resource staff with daily operations at recreational sites, supporting interpretive programs, resource management projects, administrative tasks, and routine grounds maintenance. Their work includes helping with presentations, collecting data, performing light repairs, monitoring contractor services, and maintaining clean, safe public areas.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must wear required attire by SCA while on duty.
  • Must possess and maintain valid driver’s license.
  • Possess good verbal and written communications skills.
  • Physical ability to navigate campground loops, swim areas and visit campsites, lift 50 lbs and carry a 50 lb. object 25 feet.
  • Positions may require extended periods in the outdoors during adverse conditions such as heat, cold or rain.

  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Chainsaw operation.
  • Landscaping/yard work experience.
  • Previous maintenance experience as employee or volunteer.
  • Basic hand tool skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assists higher graded Park Rangers in the development, presentation and maintenance of interpretive programs.
  • Presenting limited interpretive talks (e.g., campfire programs)
  • Conducting tours (e.g., nature walks) of limited complexity that do not require extensive background knowledge
  • Maintaining, arranging or updating displays and exhibits
  • Ensuring literature supplies are available for the public
  • Collecting designated plant, animal or geological specimens for study collections or exhibits
  • Obtaining or tracking down materials needed for special projects and assisting Park Rangers at a visitor center
  • Assists higher graded Park Rangers in completing resources management projects, such as:
  • Planting and/or watering trees
  • Planting ground cover in eroded areas
  • Building signs
  • Moving tables
  • Patrolling camp sites by removing debris, picking up litter and cleaning fire rings.
  • Assists higher graded Park Rangers collect data on visitor attendance and erosion problems
  • Assists higher graded Park Rangers with administrative duties by: checking progress and completion of routine service contractor's work (e.g., janitorial) and reporting findings and utilizing a personal computer to enter and retrieve data.
  • Gains a basic knowledge of the automated systems used, and data collected and reported on in park administration responsibilities
  • Work crew members will also work with project staff, USACE volunteers and external volunteer organizations to accomplish some of these tasks.
  • Using a variety of common hand tools, such as hatchets, saws, tampers, rakes, and shovels in performing simple maintenance or repair jobs and/or assisting others in more complex and demanding tasks such as moving earth or sand; and similar tasks.
  • Operating simple power tools as required.
  • Moving materials by wheelbarrows or hand trucks
  • Performing routine maintenance work required, such as painting, scrubbing, sweeping, debris removal, tree cutting, litter pickup, weeding, and other tasks.
  • On occasion, cutting or trimming grass using clippers of light or moderate weight.
  • Digging ditches and trenches, filling and leveling holes, cleaning and storing hand tools
  • Performing a variety of routine maintenance and upkeep duties for sites such as recreation and wildlife sites. This includes but is not limited to: weeding, raking leaves, emptying refuse cans, removing debris from public grounds
  • Loads and unloads trucks, box cars and other conveyances; moves supplies and materials to proper location by wheelbarrows or hand trucks; stacks materials for storage or binning; collects refuse and salvageable material
  • May clean and sanitize park buildings and facilities including restrooms, picnic shelters, RV dump stations, boating facilities, pump-houses, storage buildings, and park offices.
