About The Position

The Indirect Lending Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and decisioning consumer loan applications received through the credit union’s indirect dealer network. This role analyzes credit reports, collateral information, and overall risk to determine appropriate loan structure and approval terms in accordance with credit union policies, regulatory requirements, and established underwriting guidelines. The underwriter works closely with auto dealers, indirect lending partners, and internal staff to ensure timely and accurate decisions while maintaining sound lending practices and delivering an exceptional member and partner experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of loan processing and/or underwriting experience preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally and tactfully with dealers, finance officers, office managers, and branch staff.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while managing interruptions and maintaining productivity.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to new systems, processes, and changing priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in indirect lending strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Dealertrack and RouteOne systems is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Symitar and Microsoft Excel preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate borrower creditworthiness using credit reports, income documentation, debt obligations, and compensating factors as applicable.
  • Underwrite and process loan applications within 15 minutes of receipt, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established guidelines.
  • Perform the underwriting process and render loan decisions within established lending authority.
  • Demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate loan decisions to dealerships and/or members, addressing and resolving questions in a professional and satisfactory manner.
  • Support portfolio quality through consistent, well-documented underwriting decisions.
  • Follow-up on loans in queue in a timely manner, with no pending loans older than 30 days.
  • Adhere to all applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to ECOA/Regulation B, TILA/Regulation Z, FCRA, and UDAAP standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of Credit Union operations by successfully completing all required annual training.
  • Collaborate with team members to manage daily workflow, ensuring all indirect dealer applications are reviewed promptly and all dealer-related requests are addressed in a timely and professional manner.
