About The Position

Enhances the quality of life for our members by meeting or exceeding their service expectations. Provides high quality service, defined as ensuring prompt and accurate lending decisions while identifying additional member benefit needs. Coaches loan originators in a professional approach on application development and identifying member needs. Assembles and evaluates loan applications for credit approvals, denials and counteroffers. Approves and counter offers applications within approved lending limits and in accordance with sound lending practices as set forth in credit union policies and procedures. Evaluates loan applications outside of lending authority and makes thorough recommendations for exceptions to the Consumer Loan Underwriter II and Lending Management. Communicates with related-team members, dealers and applicants to explain credit decisions and to obtain additional loan information and documentation. Strong understanding of the lifecycle of a loan and the loan application process. Ensures compliance and proper loan development prior to decisioning. Consumer Loan Underwriter will actively document credit card cross sell opportunities, and limit increases. Ensures that members and prospective members are promptly and professionally served by underwriting loans accurately and within the set timeframe. Provides general Credit Union information. Ability to work in high volume, fast paced environment.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • 3-5 years of experience, preferably in a Credit Union or financial institution.
  • Live the mission, vision, and core values of the credit union.
  • Able to communicate effectively and tactfully with employees and members both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and being self-reliant to better analyze and solve problems.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills. Ability to multi-task and be agile to serve members and employees.
  • Maintain working knowledge of Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and collaborative tools (Teams and Zoom).
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of organization’s Employee Handbook and policies.
  • Must demonstrate a functional knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act in addition to other Federal laws, including but not limited to U.S. Patriot Act, Office of Foreign Assets & Control, Anti-Money Laundering, Right to Financial Privacy Act, and the Bank Bribery Act.

Responsibilities

  • Consumer Loan Underwriting Direct and Indirect– Responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and approving, countering or denying consumer credit requests within established individual authority limits in accordance with lending guidelines and operating procedures. Complies with all laws and regulations. Understands how to utilize credit underwriting techniques, loan policy, insured program guidelines, and available tools/reference materials required for loan processing. Ability to distinguish between patterns and anomalies within the context of the entire credit application to assess the creditworthiness of a borrower. Assess and mitigate credit risk and explain rationale for decisions and underwrite successfully to loan policy. Analyze information from credit application and credit reporting agencies to render prudent decisions. Accurately review, analyze, and evaluate member’s income documentation including Federal personal and business tax returns and schedules. Interview members to analyze and discuss member’s overall financial position, credit, collateral evaluations and assist in all aspects of the lending process.
  • Queue and Time Management– Responsible for providing timely and accurate information, responses, and decisions to internal and external members. Meet decision turn around service levels while reviewing a high volume of applications. Accountable for balancing quality underwriting with exceptional service experiences with an emphasis on decision time frames on all loan applications. Actively and consistently seeks qualified opportunities to increase loan volume. Prioritize work to achieve funding goals and maintain above average closing ratios.
  • Communication and Coordination –Maintain working relationship with our dealer clients and third-party vendors through telephone calls, web messages, and emails. Work with Indirect Lending Dev. Manager to build strong dealer relationships. Assist our operations and funding team in resolving problems related to the funding of loans. Monitor dealer performance to ensure dealers meets our performance guidelines. Assist business partners and staff in problem resolution on indirect loan members. Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant concerns. Resolves (or refers) requests and problems promptly and courteously. Ensures that members’ and employee requests and questions are promptly acknowledged and resolved. Maintains privacy of member account information. Educate members on the terms and conditions of their loan to ensure a clear understanding. Supports and assist personnel as needed.
  • Attends and participates in meetings as required. Ensures that the Credit Union’s quality reputation is maintained and projected. Completes assigned tasks for Lending Managers and Systems Administrator as required.
  • Loan Referrals– Maintains a product knowledge level that supports a needs-based referral and selling program. Actively listen to members to identify needs and cross-sell accordingly. Deliver results related department goals as well as member expectations. Provide financial solutions, based on member needs that meet their goals. Support and present appropriate solutions for member’s needs and enhance the quality and depth of member relationships and profitability.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
