We are looking for a Hydrologist to join our team in the Mining Bureau within the Coal Mining Section. The Hydrologist will review plans for proposed mining operations to ensure successful groundwater, surface water, and geomorphic protections and reclamation pursuant to the relevant statutes. The Hydrologist will participate in the complete project life cycle: from review of the initial plan to hydrogeologic investigations during mining to validating landscape-scale reclamation in the field. Responsibilities may include: assessing hydrologic conditions and mining impacts through review of hydrologic data and models; determining whether applications, amendments, and revisions are in compliance with regulations and permit requirements, and responding accordingly; reviewing and implementing state statutes, rules, and policies; conducting routine compliance inspections and discipline specific investigations; and acting as a liaison for DEQ to the public and industry on matters related to mining impacts. The Hydrologist will evaluate and interpret complex data systems, uncertain methodologies, and variable outcomes in developing legally and scientifically defensible conclusions. Applicants must have the ability to convey technical concepts and principles to a variety of audiences through excellent technical writing and verbal communication. The Mining Bureau is unique in that our scientists are both permit reviewers and compliance inspectors. This position involves primarily office work and review of hydrologic data submitted to the Section, and the scientist will also conduct week-long inspection compliance trips throughout the entire year. Inspections can require walking and driving in extreme weather conditions over uneven surfaces and in active mine areas with hazardous equipment.
