About The Position

The Hydrologist position at the City of Tucson’s Water Department works on diverse water recharge projects that help Tucson Water maximize the city’s water resources. The projects may include underground storage of water through aquifer recharge, regulatory compliance monitoring and reporting, well siting and design and well drilling. Work is performed under the supervision of the Chief Hydrologist. This position does not supervise. Working Conditions: Indoor and outdoor work with some exposure to physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment. This position will be expected to operate a city vehicle. Must have open availability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Valid and unrestricted Class D Drivers license

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in: Hydrology, Geology, or a closely related field is required.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Project, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with groundwater modeling (e.g. Groundwater Vistas and MODFLOW).
  • Experience in data management and analysis related to hydrologic or environmental projects.
  • Familiarity using GIS software.
  • Experience using software to analyze physical and chemical parameters of aquifers.
  • A desire to learn and a positive attitude.
  • Flexibility working in a dynamic workplace including evolving digital tools, changing hybrid environment, shifting priorities and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manages various recharge and field projects to maximize water resources for the utility.
  • Coordinates with contractors and agencies to acquire the necessary permits to execute projects.
  • Prepares budgets and schedules to meet project parameters and timelines.
  • Drives to various worksites to conduct inspections.
  • Reviews and assists in field-based data collection.
  • Monitors projects for regulatory compliance, prepares and submits compliance reports to the appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Prepares field logs to document and track changes to maintain hydrologic data for the utility.
  • Utilizes mapping software to conduct groundwater flow modeling to aid in project planning and water quality monitoring and analysis.
  • Analyzes data to ensure quality control.
  • Coordinates with the Public Information Office to conduct outreach to internal and external stakeholders on project activities.
  • Prepares and presents water resource information to regulators, technical audiences and community groups.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
