About The Position

Barr is seeking a hydrogeologist to join our team to help with challenging projects related to quantitative hydrogeology. In this hybrid role, you will apply hydrogeology and groundwater modeling skills on projects related to water supply evaluations, remediation of contaminated groundwater, mine planning and development, and groundwater-surface water interactions. Responsibilities may include working individually or as a part of a project team to assist with conceptual site model development, numerical modeling of groundwater flow and fate and transport, and aquifer test performance and analysis. Assignments may also include supervision of project teams. Fieldwork opportunities for this position may be available and may require some out-of-town travel. Requirements

  • Education: master’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, or a related engineering degree.
  • Experience: 4 or more years of work experience directly related to groundwater flow and/or fate and transport modeling. Experience in aquifer test implementation and analysis.
  • Software: strong computer skills, including familiarity with MODFLOW and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience: 5 or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Software: proficiency in GIS and programming experience using Python or FORTRAN.
  • Training: 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) certification.
  • License: professional Geologist or Professional Engineer license in at least one jurisdiction or the ability to achieve a license within two years.
  • Familiarity with Groundwater Vistas.
  • Experience in aquifer test implementation and analysis.
  • Experience or coursework in the use of groundwater fate and transport codes.
  • Experience or coursework in parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis using PEST.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: apply hydrogeology and geoscience expertise to design and execute subsurface investigations, groundwater and soil sampling programs, and hydrogeologic data collection. Independently analyze and interpret data to evaluate groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and site conditions. Contribute to development, calibration, and application of groundwater models to support site assessments and remedial designs.
  • Project support: lead day-to-day coordination of field activities and logistics, including drilling oversight, monitoring well installation, contractor management, and equipment preparation. Track project progress, budgets, and deliverables, and communicate key milestones to project managers and clients.
  • Problem solving: evaluate geologic and hydrogeologic conditions and identify practical solutions to environmental and water resource challenges. Apply regulatory knowledge, hydrogeologic methods, and scientific reasoning to support project decision-making and recommend approaches to complex problems.
  • Communication: prepare clear and accurate technical deliverables including field documentation, boring logs, figures, tables, modeling results, and report sections. Draft client correspondence and present findings to project managers and stakeholders in a concise and professional manner.
  • Interpersonal savvy: collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, regulators, and clients. Mentor junior staff by providing technical guidance and reviewing their work, while fostering strong, productive working relationships across projects.
