About The Position

Reporting to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III, this position will perform the full range of journey work duties associated with the construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms. Maintaining refrigeration units and their control systems.

Requirements

  • REQUIRES current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
  • Please make sure to list and/or attach a copy of your EPA Type I, II, III and/or Universal Technician certification on your application in order to receive credit for it (see above requirement).
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution, and control systems Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Identifying the cause of the problem, determining what materials and tools are needed, the method of repair, and carrying out repair procedures independently on most jobs. The larger, costlier, exceptional, or more complex jobs may be reviewed by a technical supervisor to determine extent of malfunction, to assure that proper work methods are being followed and that work is of acceptable quality.
  • Training new mechanics or supervising the work of helpers and may be called upon to assist with duties throughout the facility.
  • Working with limited supervision while addressing moderate to complex repair activities.
  • Using electrical test devices, troubleshooting and repairing chiller electrical control circuits, independently overhauling small reciprocal compressors, overhauling larger reciprocal, absorption, and centrifugal compressors while under technical supervision.
  • Checking for accuracy and calibrating electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control systems, troubleshooting control circuits and replacing faulty thermostats, wiring, and control devices.
  • Performing preventive maintenance on air-conditioning and air handling equipment, logging operational characteristics of chillers according to preset schedule, and installing air-conditioning units.
  • Building and installing ductwork and chilled water piping, adjusting chillers and balancing distribution systems to achieve maximum energy efficiency, removing and replacing joints or lengths of pipe in chilled water distribution systems.
  • Assisting in troubleshooting/repairing fire alarm system.
