About The Position

Reporting to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III, this position handles the design and upkeep of lawns, landscaping, and grounds surrounding a medium custody level correctional institution. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: - Completing work assignments received from MMS work order system and the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor. - Mowing, edging, removing leaves, trash, and snow, and trimming trees and shrubs as required. - Applying pesticides and selecting plants and trees which are adaptable to the local climate. - Sketching landscape plans for undeveloped areas, locating plants, trees, sidewalks, roads, etc. - Preparing requisitions for supplies, materials, and equipment needed for grounds department and providing cost estimates for expenditures to maintain the grounds and equipment. - Ensuring grounds equipment has up-to-date service records and is cleaned regularly. - Making minor mechanical repairs to equipment such as tractors, mowers, disks, and rakes - Supervising the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled labor (including offenders) and ensuring they are adhering to OSHA guidelines for safety.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in grounds upkeep
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the horticultural practices and/or techniques applicable to the layout and/or upkeep of formal gardens and/or grounds.
  • Experience supervising employees or offenders.
