Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Requires successful completion of 1 year (or current enrollment in) formal training in a state-approved Journey HVAC program at a vocational or technical school, college, or apprenticeship sponsor organization.
  • Fundamental/introductory knowledge of, HVAC techniques, codes, procedures and materials.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, procedures and practices, including the proper use of safety equipment as defined by OSHA and industry standards.
  • Applies HVAC and safety knowledge indicated herein.
  • Safely uses tools and equipment indicated herein.
  • Ability to solve problems and manage information indicated herein.
  • Requires proficient written and verbal English communication skills, at least on an high school graduate level, to interact with departmental/JHM staff.
  • Identifies and avoids hazards as indicated by warning labels, signage, lights and other warning devices.

Responsibilities

  • As directed by, and/or in assistance of, higher level HVAC mechanics/supervisor, performs maintenance, installation and repair work on HVAC systems, equipment and components. This work is performed under close supervision and using the tools and techniques of HVAC technology.
  • Identifies HVAC equipment problems and component conditions; submits identified problems to supervisor (or higher level HVAC mechanic) for directed resolution.
  • Read and interpret schematic and construction drawings, service manuals and other technical documents (sometimes with the aid of supervisor or higher level HVAC mechanics).
  • Follow instructions provided by blueprints, drawings, written materials, work orders and oral instruction.
  • Communicate (written and oral) with supervisor and departmental/JHM staff.
  • Assimilate JHH/departmental mission, policies and procedures as well as specific job safety aspects.
  • Work in shop and mechanical area environments with exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise and fumes.
  • Get into/works within confined spaces and in awkward positions.
  • Work at heights of up to 30 feet above surface using ladders, lifts and equipment.
  • Work requires ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires ability to load/unload and transport/position tools, equipment and materials & push/pull loaded hand trucks weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents has little likelihood of harm when established health precautions are followed.
  • Work requires the use of protective safety devices including, but not limited to, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, infection prevention apparel/apparatus, back belt.
