Job Summary: HVAC apprentices learn a wide range of skills related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They may also be trained in other areas such as electrical work. HVAC apprentices typically spend their days on the job site with an HVAC contractor or technician. They are expected to perform all tasks asked of them without hesitation or question. This includes repairing existing systems and trouble shooting. This position will include travel across the U.S. with stays of up to 4-5 weeks without returning home. This can be more or less depending on the job. Essential Responsibilities/Activities: Following safety procedures at all times while on the job site, including wearing protective gear such as masks and gloves when necessary. Learn to use tools of the trade refrigeration gauges, vacuum pumps recovery units and multi meters. Communicating with site supervisors, architects, contractors, and engineers regarding project details and status updates. Performing basic electrical work such as wiring thermostats or other equipment. Applies laws, regulations, and departmental policies. Diagnosing problems with HVAC systems and equipment and repairing them as needed. Cleaning equipment before and after use to remove dust or debris. Makes detailed measurements with a variety of detection and measurement instruments. Provides feedback and solutions to problems that arise. Completes field reports for existing equipment while on job site. Maintaining inventory of parts needed for repairs. Measuring and cutting materials for installation using hand tools such as saws and drills. Reads and understands technical manuals, instructions. Provides customer relations in field service work. Education and Experience Requirements: Degree(s): Associate’s degree in HVAC or enrolling in the program or have previously had Vocational/Technical Training. License(s): Refrigerant Handling License, Clean driving record. Certification(s): None Essential Mental Functions: Communicates effectively in written and spoken form. Possesses excellent interpersonal relationship skills. Exhibits good decision making and analytical problem solving abilities. Demonstrates strong multi-tasking capabilities and organizational skills. Works effectively in a team environment. Works effectively in a fast-paced high-pressure environment. Essential Physical Functions: Lift up to 50lbs. Sit or stand for up to 95 percent of work hours. Periodic visits to manufacturing facility with seasonal hot and cold temperatures, dust, and some chemical fume exposure.
