About The Position

The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County in its mission to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. Furthermore, the incumbent is expected to incorporate the agency values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Responsiveness and Excellence in all aspects of their work. The incumbent serves as the Health Equity Specialist for the Tobacco Prevention & Control Program within the Clinical Services and Community Health Promotion Division. As such, the incumbent is expected to perform functions requiring independent judgment which include the following: Coordinate and oversee the youth component of the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program known as Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT): Recruit and maintain middle and high school youth for participation in Pinellas County SWAT. SWAT is composed of school-based, community and county teams; Assist students in recruiting SWAT school advisors (adults) if necessary; Train and monitor SWAT school advisors in duties/responsibilities each year; Assist SWAT school advisors in getting clubs started each year by facilitating orientation sessions; Train youth in tobacco prevention issues; Partner with community agencies to train youth advocates; Train youth in leadership skills trainings such as presentation skills, public speaking, educating decision makers; Organize and attend school-based events and countywide youth meetings Facilitate youth participation in local and state SWAT/Partnership meetings and events; Assist youth in organizing, implementing and evaluating school-based and countywide youth meetings/projects/activities; Provide or arrange transportation for SWAT members to meetings and events as needed; Chaperone SWAT activities/events and recruit and organize additional adult chaperones for SWAT events as needed; Coordinate youth activities with other entities of the partnership and community; Maintain and submit monthly reports documenting SWAT activities and participation; Participate in monthly Statewide and Region 3 Youth Advisory Board (YAB) conference calls; Participate in Tobacco-Free Coalition of Pinellas County meetings at least once per quarter; Complete and submit Automated Tobacco Activity Collection System (ATACS) reports each quarter for the SWAT policy area. Complete activities associated with Goal 1.2 Policy to Counteract Tobacco Product Marketing at the Retail Point of Sale in the annual work plan: Develop and implement work plan activities to meet requirements for Point of Sale policy area; Analyze local data collected and present to target audiences for the Point of Sale policy area; Engage local decision makers and educate on the benefits of tobacco free policies in the community; Provide technical assistance to partners in the area of tobacco control policies; Educate local retailers on best practices and regulations for selling tobacco products; Train and mobilize community partners to garner support for local policy change around tobacco; Complete and submit Automated Tobacco Activity Collection System (ATACS) reports each quarter for the Point of Sale policy area.

  • THIS IS A TOBACCO FREE POSITION.
  • The use of personal transportation is needed to conduct activities of the position. Therefore, reliable transportation with appropriate auto insurance and a valid Florida Driver’s License is required per Florida Statutes 64 D -3.041
  • Must be able to work some evening and weekend, including overnight travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred that the incumbent holds a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in public health, health education, health sciences, psychology or sociology.
  • Preferred that incumbent has experience working with data related to substance abuse and/or strategic planning.
  • Preferred at least 3 years of experience working with community outreach and youth programs.
