About The Position

Leader Dogs for the Blind, an international organization based in Rochester Hills, Michigan, has been empowering individuals who are blind or low vision for over 85 years. We provide comprehensive guide dog services and orientation and mobility training, equipping individuals with lifelong skills for safe and independent daily travel. Our life-changing work is provided free of charge, and we are 100% philanthropically funded. Our mission is driven by 191 dedicated team members and more than 1,000 volunteers who advocate alongside our clients to create a more equitable world. SUMMARY The Human Resources Intern provides a broad range of administrative support to the Human Resources department.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills.
  • Ability to maintain files and keep items in a logical and organized manner; ability to operate most office equipment.
  • This position may be required to be on campus when deemed necessary at the direction of management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills, and have acuity with detail.
  • Proficiency with databases, and excellent computer skills.
  • Proficient in latest version of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines; must have the ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Possess sound business judgment, exercise professional conduct, understand and follow business ethics and standards, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in all duties.
  • Comfortable working around dogs in an office environment.
  • Willing to perform general public relations duties on behalf of Leader Dog (perform tours, answer general questions, be a professional and courteous representative of Leader Dog, etc.).
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions with employees that promote positive teamwork, as well as with volunteers, donors, clients and all constituents of Leader Dog. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates incoming communications from internal and external constituents via telephone, email, and in-person; responds and triages needs as necessary.
  • Assists with all aspects recruiting and onboarding of paid team members utilizing established guidelines and procedures.
  • Maintains Human Resource Information System records, employment files, and other records in compliance with laws, regulations, best practices, and department procedures; compiles data and responds to requests for information as appropriate.
  • Participates in the coordination of all health and welfare benefits, including COBRA, FMLA and other leaves of absence, disability, paid-time off, and worker’s compensation.
  • Prepares power point presentations, handouts, excel documents, and other materials as directed.
  • Assists team members with payroll and timekeeping issues.
  • Schedules meetings and appointments and assists in the coordination of events.
  • Assists in special projects for Human Resources department.
  • Compiles HR data and metrics; provides data as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
