About The Position

Materials Testing Consultants (MTC) is a multi-disciplinary firm with primary services in construction materials testing, geotechnical engineering, and environmental consulting. We are looking for an organized and resourceful Human Resources Intern for the summer of 2026. In this role, you will work with and support the two-person HR and Recruiting team at MTC during our busiest time of year. Throughout the summer, there will be opportunities to work on recruiting, new employee orientation and onboarding, open enrollment, payroll, employee and safety investigations, researching and updating employment policies and handbooks, and any number of other things. If you have a special interest in something, let us know. There might be an opportunity to help there as well! The perfect candidate for this position will ideally be studying business or human resources, and have a valid driver’s license and good driving record as they may be visiting our other offices in Okemos and Dexter, MI.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a related Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program
  • Knowledge of human resources processes and best practices
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to learn other HR systems as needed – Indeed, LinkedIn, Dayforce, Absorb LMS, etc.
  • Professional communication skills – both written and verbal
  • High ethical standards and the discretion needed to work with confidential employee information
  • The ability to act quickly and calmly during emergencies or when priorities shift quickly
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check

Responsibilities

  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the HR functions and duties
  • Provide clerical and administrative support to HR employees and assist with filing and archiving employee records
  • Process documentation and prepare reports relating to personnel activities (staffing, recruitment, training, grievances, etc.)
  • Answer employee requests regarding human resources issues, rules, and regulations including benefits programs
  • Review current employment policies, research alternatives, and provide recommendations for leadership review
  • Assist with writing job descriptions, updating the applicant tracking system, and identifying qualified candidates for open positions
  • Support new and veteran managers with HR issues as they come up
  • Be part of the integration of new company values into daily workflows and the company culture
  • Other projects and duties as assigned or requested
