About The Position

The Housing Advocate Team Lead will perform various duties relating to working with poverty and vulnerable populations. This team member will work at The Road Home’s Most Vulnerable Population (MVP) crisis services and shelter program, serving up to 160 adult individuals daily. The MVP Program prioritizes aging and medically vulnerable individuals who are experiencing homelessness, providing safe, accommodating non-congregate emergency shelter. The Lead Housing Advocate will provide excellent customer service, resources, and support to our Resource Center guests from a Trauma-Informed Care and Housing-Focused perspective. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Demonstrate awareness of, and sensitivity to, diverse populations. Ability to contribute to the Agency’s commitment to enhancing awareness and appreciation of diverse ethnic and culture heritages are particularly valued.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively and handle difficult situations with professionalism, compassion and from a Trauma-Informed Care perspective.
  • Ability to exercise proper discretion and independent judgment to make quick decisions, occasionally without immediate direction or supervision.
  • Knowledge of internal and community resources.
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and a commitment to make a difference.
  • Ability to actively listen, empathize, and offer support to guests.
  • Ability to work independently and use sound judgment within the Trauma-Informed framework to make decisions.
  • Desire to inspire, motivate and support staff and guests.
  • Understanding of the Housing First philosophy. Willingness to have conversations with guests about housing.

  • Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, and walk for at least an hour at a time.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality customer service to our guests, who may require additional resources in addition to a warm bed for the night.
  • Monitor and help regulate activities at the Resource Center, ensuring rules and procedures are followed by both staff and guests.
  • Provide clear and specific information and instruct guests of Resource Center rules/procedures in a kind, compassionate, and trauma-informed way.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe facility, identifying special needs and referring needs to the supervisor.
  • Assist in resolving conflicts that may arise among guests.
  • Write incident reports as needed, maintain accurate records of guest stays, and ensure accurate shelter documentation.
  • Answer phones, take messages, and respond to the public.
  • Provide occasional crisis intervention and emergency interface with community resources such as EMS and law enforcement.
  • Provide assistance and support to the Shift Supervisor and act as lead staff in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Operate as part of a team that strives to serve the homeless in our community.

  • Willingness to understand that housing first, harm reduction, and low barrier access to resources are best practices and essential to our mission at The Road Home.
  • Ability to set and maintain good boundaries, using Trauma-Informed Care as a guideline
