About The Position

Responsible for cutting, staining, and preparing tissue samples for the Dermatopathologist to review. Responsible for prioritizing testing procedures and completing those procedures in an accurate and timely manner. Maintain proper accurate records of all tests done in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulations

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree (for HT); Bachelor’s Degree (for HTL)
  • Registered HT or HTL
  • Possess critical thinking skills, flexibility, and a positive attitude
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory safety, and laboratory equipment uses and maintenance
  • Able to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Friendly, cheerful, and helpful to patients and others
  • Able to meet business and team needs while following office policies and procedures

  • Able to cut 20-30 blocks per hour

Responsibilities

  • Receive and properly handle tissue specimens from procedures, operating rooms, and diagnostic procedures
  • Accession, label, process, and preserve tissue specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Perform embedding, trimming, microtomy and staining of tissue specimens using appropriate laboratory techniques and equipment (e.g., microtomes, stainers, block trimmers).
  • Fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate tissue specimens with wax for preservation and study by the pathologist.
  • Prepare slides and apply specified stains to enhance diagnostics under the microscope.
  • Examine slides to ensure quality and detect abnormalities, report deviations from normal as appropriate.
  • Prepare and maintain media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
  • Maintain and clean laboratory equipment and instruments according to established procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment; follow ordering processes as needed.
  • Establish and monitor quality control programs.
  • Accurately document all procedures and results, including computerized records, in accordance with established policies and regulations.
  • Assist in gross specimen examination as permitted by licensure, education, and physician direction.
  • Perform general histological and cytology specimen preparation work.
  • Participate in laboratory proficiency testing and maintain required competencies and continuing education.
  • Perform stains and maintenance on IHCS and specialty stainer
  • Complete validations of new/updated stains
  • Troubleshooting
  • Train others as needed
