Ohio State Highway Patrol Lateral Cadet Requirements: Applicants MUST be or have: United States Citizen 20 to 39 years of age High School Diploma or GED Must be at the 30th percentile on the Cooper Standards (Fitness Standard) to enter Must have 2 years or 4160-hour equivalent law enforcement experience in the preceding 2 years with an Ohio agency OR 1 year or 2080-hour equivalent law enforcement experience with an Ohio agency AND the successful completion of an Ohio peace officer basic training program at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy. Must have a current OPOTA certificate Valid Drivers License Possible disqualifiers\: Recently used any drug of abuse that was not prescribed by a physician; recently used marijuana; ever sold or established a pattern of abuse of any felony drug of abuse; pleaded guilty or no contest to, or had a conviction for, driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs within the past five years or more than one charge ever; currently in the pretrial process for any criminal charge other than a traffic violation; currently have six or more points on a driving record in any jurisdiction; ever been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to aggravated vehicular homicide or aggravated vehicular assault; failed to meet the requirements of child support statutes, or a court order relating to the subject, due to a reason other than an inability to pay; ever been an instigator in any act covered in Chapter 2907 Sex Offenses of the Ohio Revised Code; ever been convicted of domestic violence or a domestic violence related offense. In addition, applicants must also meet hearing standards. Applicants must be able to perceive a stimulus within the frequency range 500 (Hz) to 3000 (Hz) at a tone not to exceed 30 (db). The Ohio State Highway Patrol has an appearance standards policy that includes information to address tattoos and body art. The policy reads\: Future employees with tattoos that would be visible when wearing the short-sleeve uniform shirt are required to wear long sleeves. Troopers with visible tattoos will wear the issued long-sleeve uniform shirt year-round. Trainees will complete a prescribed curriculum of intensive academy training. During this time, Trainees are paid $22.00/hr. and receive benefits while in training. Trainees reside at the Academy 24 hrs/day and 5 days/week. Trainees will be subject to working during these hours, but will be compensated for 40 hours of work, as completed.
