Requirements

Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques
Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
Skilled in operating and performing pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
This position will be required to respond before, during, and following emergency situations.
Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. A valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required within 10 months of appointment to this position.
This position requires a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
