Requirements

  • Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques
  • Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skilled in operating and performing pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • This position will be required to respond before, during, and following emergency situations.
  • Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. A valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required within 10 months of appointment to this position.
  • This position requires a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
