About The Position

This position will be responsible for maintaining our state roadway system.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques
  • Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools
  • Skills to operate and perform pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
  • Ability to read and understand job related materials and fill out reports and forms
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic
  • Ability to stand for a extended period of time.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies.
  • While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • A Class “E” driver’s license is required at time of hire.
  • A CDL Class “B” License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • Possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Responsibilities

  • Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
