About The Position

This position supports the agency’s mission by performing roadside highway maintenance to ensure safe and efficient transportation for the public. Responsibilities include landscaping and the maintenance of vegetation, plants, and trees along roadways. Duties involve mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, and removing debris to maintain clear visibility. This role requires the use of hand tools, power tools, and adherence to safety protocols while working in various outdoor conditions. Effective communication, the ability to follow directions, and teamwork are essential to completing tasks safely and efficiently.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.
  • Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skills to operate and perform pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Must respond to emergencies.
  • Must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • Required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • This position requires a valid Class “E” driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck.
  • Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
