About The Position

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Chesterfield Health District provides public health services to the residents of Chesterfield County, Powhatan County, and the City of Colonial Heights. This position is based in Chesterfield and will require some travel to other clinics within the district. The Healthcare Technician Senior performs routine clinical tasks, assists nursing staff and clinicians, collects laboratory specimens, performs various venipuncture and capillary sticks, conducts clinical laboratory tests, collects sputum samples, assesses client conditions based on VDH protocols, sterilizes instruments, manages supplies, maintains records, and compiles statistics. The role operates under the supervision of a licensed provider.

Requirements

  • Experience performing health screening tests and procedures, including venipuncture
  • Phlebotomy experience and documentation of phlebotomy
  • Knowledge of basic clinical and laboratory procedures and basic medical terminology
  • Ability to work with patients of all ages and ethnicities and to work with a team
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve, follow directions, set priorities
  • Organize time to accomplish work
  • Familiar with specimen collection and processing
  • Required to maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to VDH's driver safety policies
  • Evidence of specific training in performing specialized duties and functions based on area of assignment is required

  • Experience in public or health care setting
  • Cleaning and sterilization of surgical equipment experience
  • Office support experience in a medical setting
  • Bilingual communication skills in English and Spanish, Arabic or Nepali
  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant or Patient Care Technician

Responsibilities

  • Collection and documentation of patient vital signs
  • Assist nursing staff with clinic flow
  • Assist clinicians with specimen collection
  • Collection of laboratory specimens
  • Performing adult venipuncture
  • Performing pediatric venipuncture
  • Performing adult and pediatric capillary sticks
  • Performing clinical laboratory tests to include hemoglobin, glucose, urine pregnancy, and urine dipsticks
  • Collect sputum samples
  • Assesses a client for changes in condition based on an established protocol approved by VDH
  • Sterilizes instruments
  • Inventories and orders supplies
  • Maintains logs, files and records
  • Collects clinical data and compiles statistics
  • Provide patient referrals based on clinician orders
  • Complete patient labs as needed
  • Perform clerical activities including greeting patients, scheduling appointments, filing documents and using computers
