About The Position

The Health Sciences Librarian is a member of the Research & Instruction Division and serves as a library liaison to the Beaver College of Health Sciences ( BCHS ), supporting the research, instruction, and information management needs of students and faculty in assigned departments. BCHS enrolls approximately 3,500 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students at the Boone campus, Hickory campus, and App State Online and includes programs in the departments of Kinesiology, Nursing, Nutrition and Health Care Management, Public Health, Recreation Management and Physical Education, Rehabilitation Sciences, and Social Work. The librarian will provide course-integrated instruction, research consultations, specialized health sciences research services, and outreach initiatives tailored to discipline-specific needs. As a member of the sciences liaison librarian group, this position will share responsibilities for collection development and instruction for the sciences and deliver advanced support for evidence synthesis, citation management, and other research services aligned with Appalachian State University’s R2 research mission. As a faculty member of the University Libraries, the person in this role will maintain an active program of scholarship and professional service in line with Departmental Foundational Documents, the Appalachian State University Faculty Handbook, and Academic Affairs Standard Operating Procedures. This position has a significant presence in Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, in addition to the Belk Library & Information Commons. Occasional travel to the Hickory campus for classes, events, and meetings is expected, with reasonable accommodations.

Requirements

  • ALA -accredited master’s degree or equivalent advanced degree
  • Meet criteria for assistant or associate professor as stated in the Faculty Handbook

Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Information Literacy Support the curricular needs of the programs in the College of Health Sciences by designing and delivering instruction.
  • Develop tutorials and integrate library resources into App State’s learning management system.
  • Deliver multi-modal instruction sessions: synchronous or asynchronous, online or in-person.
  • Contribute to the Libraries’ chat service and research consultation program.
  • Collaborate with other librarians on instruction as appropriate.
  • Research & Evidence-Based Support Provide support to faculty and research teams conducting comprehensive literature searches for systematic reviews.
  • Locate and evaluate evidence-based literature appropriate to relevant research questions using discipline-specific frameworks.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Research & Innovation on research services, projects, and activities.
  • Stay current with NIH and other public access policy requirements for grant funding.
  • Collection Development Evaluate and recommend books, journals, and specialized databases that support the College of Health Sciences.
  • Analyze usage data to ensure collection resources are utilized effectively.
  • Stay current with research and publication trends in the health sciences literature.
  • Support new course approvals and departmental accreditations.
  • Outreach Develop and implement outreach initiatives to engage College of Health Sciences faculty, staff, and students.
  • Represent the University Libraries at university-wide and College of Health Sciences-related events.
  • Communicate information and provide updates on library collections, services, and initiatives to health sciences faculty, students, and staff.
  • Organize and collaborate with other liaisons on outreach activities and initiatives.
