About The Position

Reporting to the Manager of Health & Safety, this position performs a broad range of tasks involving development, planning, and coordination of activities related to the implementation and function of the Occupational Health and Safety Program. The Health and Safety Coordinator ensures that the college is following all applicable regulatory agency requirements relating to safety, occupational health, ergonomic assessments, risk assessments, WHMIS and emergency response plans.

Requirements

  • Two (2) year diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in occupational health & safety in a public sector environment, preferably in an educational setting.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience developing and delivering a WHMIS program.
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office and complex databases with the ability to generate reports, comparative charts, educational posters, and a variety of business materials.
  • Effective public speaking, presentation and training skills are necessary.
  • Excellent customer service skills with highly developed level of integrity, discretion, and ability to maintain strict confidentiality as well as handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.
  • Excellent understanding of occupational health and safety regulations, Codes, Acts, and legislation is essential with the ability to analyse and interpret technical documents.
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office and complex databases with the ability to generate reports, comparative charts, educational posters and a variety of business materials.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as work independently.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule in emergency situations.
  • Ability to travel between campuses.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, relating effectively to faculty and staff of various backgrounds, both internal and external.
  • Proven ability to develop and coordinate safety programs and to handle safety incidents/investigations with good judgement, confidence, and authority.
  • Proven ability to successfully promote a culture of Health & Safety.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and plan work activities with minimal supervision, respond quickly and professionally with clear judgment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to prepare clear, concise and accurate observation and investigation reports, business correspondence and program documentation such as technical procedures, guidelines and manuals.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • OFA Level 2 and/or First Aid instructor designation is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Fosters a culture of health and safety through workplace inspections, responding to safety concerns, aiding in accident investigations, and preparing related reports.
  • Supports the Manager, Health and Safety with the administration of the OHS Program and its’ elements, including but not limited to: Workplace ergonomic evaluations and audits. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)/ Globalized Harmonized System (GHS). Occupational First Aid Attendants (OFAA). New employee safety orientation. Inspections/ Investigations.
  • Supports the Occupational Health and Safety Committee by providing recommendations on policies and procedures and assisting in organizing reports for meetings.
  • Informs the Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan by working closely with the Manager, Health & Safety and providing input on Emergency Management Plans.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
