Barrick has an opening for a Head of Sustainability, US. The successful candidate is accountable for leading and integrating the permitting, environmental management, ranching, and community relations functions in support of exploration activities, mining operations, and long-term business continuity. The role provides direction, governance, and oversight to ensure regulatory compliance, responsible land stewardship, effective stakeholder engagement, and alignment with company sustainability commitments. Through close collaboration with operations and functional leaders, the Head of Sustainability ensures that land use, permitting, and community considerations are embedded into planning and decision-making, risks are proactively managed, and relationships with communities and Tribal Nations are built on trust, transparency, and accountability—supporting the US Sites' social license and long-term value creation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Land Management, or related discipline OR Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Public Policy, or related social science discipline with demonstrated experience in mining-related land use and permitting required
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in sustainability, land management, permitting, environmental management, mining operations, or related disciplines, with at least five (5) years in a senior leadership role required
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with communities, government agencies, and Tribal Nations in the context of land use, permitting, operations, or closure required
  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, tribal, and local permitting processes (e.g., NEPA, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act) and closure-related regulatory requirements.
  • Proven ability to manage environmental, social, and reputational risk across complex, multi-site operations preferred
  • Strong operationally grounded leadership style
  • Ability to influence site leadership without direct operational control
  • Clear communicator in regulator and community settings
  • Structured and disciplined decision-maker
  • Strong negotiation and conflict-resolution skills
  • Ability to balance compliance rigor with business practicality
  • Collaborative partner to Operations, Projects, Legal, and Corporate Sustainability
  • Eligible to live and work in the United States required
  • Fluent in reading and writing, in English language required

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MBA, MSc, or related) preferred
  • Professional certification (P.Eng., P.Geo., RPF, CPESC, or equivalent) considered an asset preferred
  • Experience in mining, energy, or other large-scale natural resource industries, including exposure to operating and closure-phase assets preferred
  • Sound understanding of Nevada land tenure, water rights, and natural resource management frameworks preferred
  • Familiarity with wildlife credit systems, reclamation planning, and post-closure land use considerations preferred
  • Fluent in reading and writing, in Spanish language , preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate sustainability, permitting, environmental management, ranching/land stewardship, community relations, and Indigenous engagement functions across US operations.
  • Implement corporate sustainability standards and ensure regional compliance with environmental and social governance requirements.
  • Oversee permitting strategies and regulatory submissions at federal, state, tribal, and local levels.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of company-owned and controlled lands, including ranching operations and post-closure land uses.
  • Integrate land use, water rights, biodiversity, and community considerations into life-of-mine and closure planning.
  • Maintain working relationships with regulatory agencies, Tribal Nations, communities, landowners, and key stakeholders.
  • Represent the company in public meetings, consultations, and hearings related to land, permitting, environmental, and closure matters.
  • Identify and escalate environmental, social, permitting, and closure-related risks to the VP Sustainability.
  • Support due diligence activities for development projects, acquisitions, and divestitures.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits, land agreements, community commitments, and closure obligations.
  • Identify opportunities for land optimization, conservation partnerships, and beneficial post-closure land uses.
  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary regional team, setting clear expectations and supporting capability development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
