About The Position

A licensed HVAC technician in Texas is a professional who installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for the safe condition and operation of all HVAC systems in District facilities. Requires a valid HVAC license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which requires passing an exam and meeting certain education and experience requirements. To be eligible for licensure, you must meet one of the following experience requirements: You have at least 48 months of practical experience in air-conditioning and refrigeration-related work under the supervision of a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor in the past 72 months, Or You have held a technician certification for the past 12 months and you have at least 36 months of practical experience in air-conditioning and refrigeration-related work under the supervision of a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor in the past 48 months The essential functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the characteristic duties and responsibilities noted herein, however, this list represents examples only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions found in this job description. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License with a clear record of safe driving
  • Valid HVAC license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)
  • Three (3) years successful experience in HVAC field
  • Knowledge of HVAC repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong customer service skills

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the diagnosis and repairs of malfunctions in various types of heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Assign work to repair, replace, or calibrate controls including thermostats and switches.
  • Install new heating and air conditioning systems and components and relocate and expand existing HVAC systems as needed.
  • Conduct on-site inspection of completed repair projects.
  • Monitor and inspect contract work.
  • Direct the fabrication, assembly, and installation of duct work and piping according to code specifications and connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
  • Manage preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC equipment, including changing of filters and cleaning condensers and coils.
  • Oversee duct cleaning and air quality testing as needed.
  • Oversee inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials including maintaining coolant dispensing records to meet federal requirements.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Provide training and orientation to all skilled workers in safety procedures and proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Receive and complete work orders.
  • Select materials and hardware, make time and materials cost estimates, and maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
  • Select materials and estimate costs.
  • Inspect completed jobs and maintain inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Assist Energy Manager to complete energy conservation surveys to realize most efficient, cost-effective use of HVAC energy.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
  • Utilize effective communication skills; ensure that all interactions are supportive, courteous, and respectful.
  • Maintain accurate information for payroll reporting (timecards, tardiness, and absenteeism).
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.
  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas
  • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
