About The Position

Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics, the men’s and women’s swim head coach will recruit qualified student-athletes for the programs, instruct and develop student-athletes in the sport of swimming, organize all logistics for home and away meets, and participate in community involvement. The Head Coach will also support the mission and goals of the Athletic Department and Hood College. The secondary duty for the head coach will be to support the Director of Aquatics in the overall management of the pool. Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Four years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience in coaching.
  • Experience in pool maintenance.
  • Requires experience as a supervisor.
  • Commitment to the concept of wellness.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Certified in first aid and CPR.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certificate.
  • Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet.
  • Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.
  • Oral communication skills to enable the incumbent to effectively present information and respond to questions from and build relationships with groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures manuals.
  • Proficient with statistical and financial concepts.
  • Must have the ability to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting and interpreting reports.
  • Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost effective decisions regarding programs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans.
  • Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred current Lifeguard Training Instructor certification and Water Safety Instructor Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Coaching, Instruction, and Team Administration Model and instruct student-athletes in departmental, College, Conference, and NCAA policies and procedures including Hood Honor Code, Alcohol Policy, Code of Conduct, Travel Policy, Conference bylaws and proceedings, and NCAA guidelines
  • Organize and conduct practices during the traditional season and non-traditional seasons
  • Develop team travel and security plans in compliance with departmental and College guidelines for safety and other requirements
  • Serve as the representative of the department and the College during team travel for in- and out-of-season competition.
  • Supervise team during all travel, lead team during the event
  • Manage and account for team money distributed for meal and/or other expenses.
  • Submit required forms and reports to Director of Athletics and Accounting Department
  • Responsible for operational budget
  • Develop and implement fund-raising strategies
  • Complete in-and off-season scheduling for the program.
  • Work within NCAA guidelines regarding start of season, dates of competition and end of season
  • Assure currency with NCAA regulations, conference bylaws and proceedings, and departmental policies.
  • Participate in NCAA and conference meetings and voting procedures as appropriate
  • Refer student-athletes to College resources as necessary to assist with academic, medical, and/or personal issues that may arise throughout the year
  • Represent the Department of Athletics at all on-campus Admission Open Houses and/or other predetermined events
  • Work with Director of Athletics and Department of Admission to develop annual recruiting plan for identifying prospective student-athletes
  • Work with Department of Admissions to recruit qualified student-athletes; both incoming freshmen and transfers, to Hood College
  • Work closely with Sports Information Director to develop annual media plan that includes media guides, news releases, etc. for promotion of student-athletes, the team, and the College
  • Distribute recruiting responsibilities amongst assistant and GA
  • Respond to prospective student inquiries and maintain record of contacts
  • Promote community participation and use of aquatics facilities as a source of additional revenue for the College.
  • Help plan, schedule, assign and supervise the work of lifeguards, swim instructors, cashiers, and attendants.
  • Assist in administering the aquatics budget and monitor accounts for revenue and expenses.
  • Help negotiate contracts with outside groups that want to use Hood College aquatic facilities.
  • Help ensure that all rules and regulations are properly enforced.
  • Respond to questions and concerns from the public.
