Harnessing Design Engineer

Impulse SpaceRedondo Beach, CA
62d$110,000 - $155,000

About The Position

We’re looking for a Harnessing Engineer who brings a strong mix of design and manufacturing experience in spacecraft or similarly complex systems. You’ll take full ownership of electrical harnesses from concept through build, test, and integration—making critical decisions around materials, routing, and system interfaces under demanding environmental constraints.

Requirements

  • 3 years prior experience in spacecraft or defense harness design and build
  • Hands-on background with electrical harness manufacturing and testing
  • Strong sense of ownership and autonomy; thrives in high-responsibility environments
  • Deep understanding of power systems (current, voltage, resistance, thermal impacts, derating, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of EMI/ESD mitigation techniques
  • Familiarity with relevant standards: IPC/WHMA-A-620, NASA-STD-8739.4, and other workmanship specs
  • Comfort working in a dynamic, startup-style development cycle
  • Effective communicator and collaborator across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, systems, test)

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years prior experience in spacecraft or defense harness design and build
  • Aerospace, defense, or other mission-critical hardware environments
  • Experience with high ownership model
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline (EE background not required, but understanding of electrical fundamentals is essential)

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end design, development, and integration of spacecraft electrical harnessing systems
  • Work cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, and test teams to ensure robust harness routing, interfaces, and constraints
  • Select materials and connectors suitable for vacuum, thermal, and mechanical stresses of space environments
  • Design with consideration for power distribution (voltage drop, derating, EMI/ESD susceptibility) and system-level safety
  • Validate and qualify manufacturing processes; establish workmanship and test standards aligned with IPC and NASA guidelines
  • Interpret and contribute to engineering drawings and 3D CAD assemblies (familiarity with GD&T is a plus)
  • Guide the build and test process hands-on, ensuring manufacturability and quality from first prototype to flight article
  • Define and iterate on harness design cycles appropriate to different phases of product maturity
  • Apply good engineering judgment when standards meet ambiguity—know what’s safe, and what’s not
  • Design and work with customer facing Interface Control Documents to ensure payload requirements are met

Benefits

  • In addition to base salary, for full-time hires, you may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of stock options, and access to medical, vision & dental coverage as well as access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
