About The Position

A handwork assistant is responsible for performing various manual tasks related to the finishing, binding and shipment of printed materials in a commercial print production environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Basic math skills and familiarity with measuring tools.
  • Prolonged periods of standing at machinery in a fast paced and occasionally high stress production company setting.
  • Extensive lifting and bending actions.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.
  • Effective visual and hearing abilities, with or without aid, suitable for an office and production warehouse environment.
  • May use solvents when cleaning; oils during lubrication; and alcohol or alcohol replacement during upkeep and operation of unit.

  • Prior experience in a print production or finishing environment and knowledge of bindery equipment and safety procedures is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collating and gathering: Accurately collate and gather printed materials into the proper sequence for binding, boxing and shipping.
  • Trimming: Operate trimming machines to trim the edges of printed materials to the specified dimensions or branded apparel to be prepared for kitting.
  • Padding & Packaging: Pad, nest, box and label printed materials, apparel and/or merchandise by hand.
  • Binding: Assist with various binding processes such as saddle stitching, perfect binding, spiral binding, and other binding methods.
  • Drilling and punching: Use drilling and punching machines to create holes or slots in printed materials for binding or hanging purposes.
  • Packaging and shrink-wrapping: Package finished products using appropriate materials and shrink-wrap bundles or individual pieces as required.
  • Quality control: Perform quality checks on finished products to ensure they meet customer specifications and company standards.
  • Inventory management: Assist in maintaining an organized and well-stocked inventory of materials and supplies required for handwork operations.
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor(s).
