The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs. This position for a Group Manager- GSS second shift resides within the Ground Systems Support Operations and Maintenance organization at Kennedy Space Center, providing leadership to a high performing team that reliably maintains and operates numerous assets in support of Exploration Ground Systems, International Space Station, and Launch Services Processing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in related management area; at least seven years of experience in progressively challenging technical or management positions.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated experience and success in leading represented operations and maintenance technicians (to include an understanding of Collection Bargaining Agreements) and working with engineers.
  • Must have an understanding of hazard assessment (ex: working at heights) and OSHA requirements.
  • This position may require significant overtime (to include weekends) and may require shift work on occasion.
  • Physical Requirement May be required to climb stairs to access equipment for trouble shooting.
  • Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection, and other associated personal protective equipment.
  • Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.
  • Physical requirements are sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.
  • Position is located on a hazardous testing facility; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in the event of an emergency.
  • Must be able to accurately communicate ideas in writing and verbal communication.
  • Must be able to travel to support position requirements. This may include travel to and from customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodation can be made for POV, if necessary.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions.
  • Government security clearance may be required in the future.
  • Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with planning and scheduling tools such as Maximo, Primavera, and Solumina are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and clear direction to a team of technicians across three departments within GSS.
  • Build strong relationships based on trust, integrity, and keeping commitments.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to provide recognition and constructive feedback to employees.
  • Work closely with planners, schedulers, area integrators and flow management ensuring diligent planning, readiness, and scheduling to optimize resources and maximize productivity.
  • Forecast overtime labor and assign as required to meet schedule, especially in support of critical path work/tasks.
  • Maintain persistent communication and coordination with customers and leadership.
  • Ensure work is performed safely per established Health, Safety and Environmental Procedures (HSEPs), Operating Procedures(OPs), and Work Authorization Documents (WADs).
  • Ensure timely and thorough incident response, reporting, and corrective action.
  • Engage in the field including participation in pre-task briefings, review of work orders and safe plans of action; assessment of personal protective equipment and performing behavioral safety observations and filing reports.
  • Review operating procedures and health, safety and environmental procedures as required.
  • Monitor department certifications for technicians to include required training and support the development of new certifications as required.
  • Work to develop and recognize strong performance within the department and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Facilitate meetings between engineering, technicians, work control, and customers as required to proactively solve problems associated with accomplishing work and meeting schedule.
