About The Position

Directly supervise various professional level personnel responsible for grounds operations. Functions include scheduling work/closing work orders, quality control inspections, developing and mentoring employees, employee safety, customer interface and general administration tasks associated with all aspects of grounds and turf maintenance (including snow removal operations), related equipment, supplies including "hands on" operations.

Requirements

  • High school graduation and five years of related experience in grounds and turf maintenance, including three years of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to ensure the proper use of all equipment.
  • Current driver's license or valid commercial class B motor vehicle license if required.
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • New Hampshire pesticide applicator's license
  • Right of Way license if required by department.
  • Good communication, interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • DOT Medical Card.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision of staff: Responsible for daily supervision of employees assigned.
  • Ensure code and safety compliance of employees, including mandatory logs and time keeping.
  • Schedule and assign the work for the day via the work order system.
  • Responsible for coaching, developing, training, and mentoring assigned employees
  • Responsible for timecard approvals and daily auditing of timecards for pay code, hours worked, and work order accuracy.
  • Conduct daily shift meetings to communicate the work for the day, important events, and updates that impact Facilities.
  • Participate in the interviewing and hiring process
  • Inform Director of Physical Plant and HR of any employee disciplinary concerns
  • Performance reviews for assigned staff
  • Responsible for communicating and enforcing organizational policies and procedures.
  • Communicate daily attendance to Facilities Control Center
  • Trains grounds personnel, or oversees training, on how to properly perform grounds services, including operation of equipment, safe use of chemicals, and customer interface and encourages the exercise of initiative by fostering pride in maintaining the campus to the highest departmental standards.
  • Supervise the workers, including students, and work load requirements in several assigned Zones around campus.
  • Perform periodical inspections of each Zone of responsibility with the assigned worker, and get feedback, on the conditions, and needs of each area
  • Customer service: Responsible for providing the highest level of quality of service for the campus.
  • Serve as the point of contact for Grounds.
  • Work closely with Athletics to ensure their needs are met for the various sports fields
  • Keep the Grounds shop in a neat, organized and clutter free condition.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment in the shop are kept where they belong. Also implement, and control a sign out sheet for all tools.
  • Maintain all Grounds shop equipment, and keep them in safe operating condition.
  • Follow up with issues or safety concerns with Grounds vehicles or equipment.
  • Keep accurate inventories of all Ground equipment stored in various locations around campus.
  • Diagnose and repair plows and sanders.
  • Diagnose and make small repairs on all other equipment
  • Assist other departments with welding needs IE: repairs to light poles, bollards, equipment, etc.
  • Assist when short handed in Grounds shop with work orders, moving, snow removal, mowing and other work as required.
  • Responsible for all work activities within all campus zones, and Loon Lake property.
  • Excavation requirements within your Zones, whether it be internal labor/equipment requirements, or outside vendor contracting work.
  • Coordinator and supervisor for all campus snow, and ice removal operations.
  • Coordinate, and communicate closely with the Director of Physical Plant on all conditions on campus before and during major weather events. This is very important to assist Administration in determining delays in campus openings.
  • Flood prep: Work with Campus University Police, PSU administration and state/municipal emergency response personnel to Ensure all campus vehicles and equipment are moved to a designated safe location.
  • Work with Campus University Police, PSU administration and state/municipal emergency response personnel to secure and flood prep campus buildings located on the Holderness side of campus.
  • Secure physical plant and the PE Center with sand bags and assist with the flood doors on the ice arena and AllWell
  • Administrative & financial: Emails, voicemails
  • Review nightly report for action items to follow up on
  • Maintain appropriate inventory and order supplies, tools, and equipment
  • Support Director of Physical Plant in execution of actual budget to forecasted budget
  • Assist other Facilities departments as projects require
  • Participate in construction meetings as needed
  • Serve on campus committees as required
  • WORKS WITH FACILITIES ADMINISTRATION TO PROVIDE SPECIFICATTIONS TO PROCURE A variety of grounds maintenance and construction equipment and materials; tests and evaluates proposed new equipment
  • Helps to assure that the work of the Grounds Department is completed within budgetary constraints by assisting as needed in tracking and monitoring the use of labor and supplies.
  • Coordinate purchase or lease, maintenance, repairs, recalls, state safety inspections and insurance repairs of all Physical Plant fleet vehicles.
  • Building/grounds condition and systems assessment, planning, & sustainability: Assessment of current systems
  • Planning for future needs
  • Make recommendations for achieving university sustainability goals
  • Safety & training: Lead employees in all safety practices
  • WORK WITH CAMPUS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY TO INSURE team OSHA and DOT compliance
  • WORK WITH CAMPUS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY to Coordinate department specific training
  • WORK WITH CAMPUS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY TO Monitor employee licensing and certification requirements
  • Collaborate with Director of Facilities to ensure employees attend required training and classes per licensing requirements
  • Help ensure all safety requirements, and PSU/Physical Plant regulations and training are followed by Grounds shop workers, such as hearing protection, eye protection, and proper equipment, and vehicle operation.
  • Meets with outside vendors/contractors to schedule work, review project statuses and ensure compliance with agreed upon specifications
  • Coordinates with other departments within Facilities in regards to projects, maintenance and repairs impacting the campus grounds,
  • Maintain Forklift operation certification and work with EHS to facilitate team training for others.
  • May require assisting late nights or weekends with events and assisting all campus departments with large deliveries that they can not handle on their own
  • Equipment operation, operate every piece of equipment that grounds has effectively and efficiently
  • Provide training to grounds workers in operation of such equipment
