About The Position

The Graduate Assistant for Leadership Programs serves as the Primary Advisor to the National Residence Hall Honorary, as well as the Primary Advisor for the Residence Hall Association at the direction of the Assistant Director for Recruitment, Training, and Leadership Programs. This position is for the Spring 2026 semester and requires some non-traditional hours in the leadership portfolio within residence life. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Currently enrolled in a Graduate Degree Program at American University.
  • Championing Customer Needs.
  • Evaluating and Implementing Ideas.
  • Developing Plans.
  • Making Accurate Judgments and Decisions.
  • Building and Supporting Teams
  • Flexibility and the ability to work outside of traditional business hours (i.e. M-F, 9a-5p).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 1 - 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in higher education settings with a proven record of leadership development.
  • Experience Advising the Residence Hall Association.
  • Experience Advising the National Residence Hall Honorary.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Primary Advisor for the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH).
  • Meet weekly with the Executive Boards of both RHA and NRHH.
  • Hold one-on-one meetings with each member of the RHA and NRHH executive boards weekly for a period of at least one hour.
  • Develop and execute a recruitment plan for student leaders in RHA and NRHH as well as a recruitment plan for Area Councils.
  • Purchasing for student groups (RHA, NRHH, and Hall Councils) and departmental needs
  • Assisting with the planning and execution of the HRL End of the Year Banquet
  • Develop a strategic plan for RHA and NRHH that focuses on increased involvement, increasing the RHA/NRHH Footprint on the AU campus, retention of student leaders, and the continued development of both organizations.
  • Attend All RHA/NRHH conferences with the conference delegation.
  • Monitor the Of-The-Month (OTM) process to ensure that student staff meet expectations.
  • Respond to a variety of student needs and coordinate response network within the department as well as with other university departments.
  • Attend, and have an engaged presence, at all RHA and NRHH Executive board meetings.
  • Attend, and have an engaged presence, at all RHA and NRHH programs and initiatives.
  • Attend all Fall/Spring student and professional staff training.
  • Serving on various committees within the university as assigned.
  • Regularly attend and participate in department and committee meetings; attendance at staff meetings and designated training/in-services is required.
  • Other duties not otherwise spelled out in the above but are in support of the department of residence life priorities and strategic goals.
