About The Position

The Pima County Information Technology Department is seeking a self-motivated, thorough, disciplined, and perceptive individual for the role of Geographic Information Systems Technician. The ideal candidate has skill in creating and maintaining GIS and related data. This position will be involved in a wide variety of GIS projects, using ESRI and Autodesk products. Projects may include the following areas of focus: Maintaining the county’s parcel base using Esri’s Parcel Fabric. Creating and updating streets within subdivisions using Esri's Linear Referencing System. Reviewing and updating core county layers involving: parcels, right of way, county property and county development projects. Collecting staff and asset data in the field using Esri's Indoors. Promoting the use of PimaMaps, which may include training internal/external customers. Interpreting legal descriptions/documents to create GIS features. Reviewing existing or incoming data for accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness. Assisting with customers service requests which may include identifying and compiling GIS data to create maps in response to requests and disseminating information via web-portal, phone, or email. Managing assigned projects. This role requires close collaboration with other project teams, so strong interpersonal skills are essential. This is an in-office position located in Tucson, AZ, and cannot be remote. The Information Technology Department is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college, university or technical school in Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, cartography, geography or related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.
  • Two years of technical experience in geographic information systems, which included data creation and analysis, the production of maps, reports and cartographic products.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with/knowledge of creating and maintaining GIS data using ArcGIS Pro, traditional and/or branch versioned data sets, and feature services.
  • Experience with/knowledge of working with Esri products such as Parcel Fabric, Linear Referencing System (LRS), Indoors, Utility Network, Workflow Manager etc.
  • Experience with/knowledge of editing and maintaining points, lines and polygons in GIS base layers such as assets, parcel boundaries, streets, rights-of-way, etc. using ESRI and/or Autodesk products, etc.
  • Experience with/knowledge of reading and interpreting legal documents and descriptions (e.g. subdivision plats, deeds, Assessor maps, as-builts, etc.) and generating GIS features from them.

Responsibilities

  • Designs or prepares cartographic representations of GIS data using GIS applications, including web-based mapping systems
  • Maintains or modifies existing GIS data
  • Enters data into GIS databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or automatic conversion to features, or converting other sources of digital data
  • Reviews existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documentation
  • Interprets aerial or ortho imagery for mapping purposes
  • Revises existing maps and reports, making all necessary corrections and adjustments
  • Compiles GIS data required for map preparation, including aerial imagery, survey notes, records, reports, and original maps
  • Documents GIS procedures, metadata, and operating standards
  • Provides technical support to users or customers regarding the maintenance, development, or operation of GIS databases, applications, and data collection devices
  • Identifies and compiles GIS data to create maps in response to requests
