The GIS SME serves as the technical authority on spatial data, geospatial services, and geospatial developer logic, translating complex mission requirements into actionable data models, service configurations, and workflow designs. This role is responsible for designing and maintaining geodatabase schemas, domains, subtypes, and relationship classes, ensuring alignment with enterprise data standards. The GIS SME publishes and optimizes map services, feature services, and vector tile layers, working with customers and vendors to ensure performance, scalability, and usability across cloud and on-prem environments. The SME supports developers by translating spatial concepts, such as topology, projections, linear referencing, network behavior, and spatial indexing into implementable technical logic. They also conduct spatial QA/QC to validate data integrity, cartographic accuracy, schema alignment, and service functionality prior to releases. Additional responsibilities include documenting editing workflows, versioning strategies, replication patterns, metadata standards, and data dictionaries, while advising the GPMO on geospatial governance and enterprise data management best practices. Key deliverables include optimized geodatabase schemas, validated map and feature service configurations, spatial QA/testing plans, metadata guidance, and workflow documentation supporting consistent, reliable geospatial operations.
