About The Position

This position is responsible for performing various duties associated with the Arkansas State Parks Information Management System and Geographic Information System (GIS), including feature development, map production, data entry and analysis, web application development, and database maintenance. Applicants should have experience working within the ArcGIS Online environment using ArcGIS applications, Experience Builder, Python, Arcade, HTML, CSS, and Microsoft SQL. Routinely locates and records park assets and resources using construction drawings, surveys, legal descriptions, field measurements, and various remote sensing methods. Applicants must have the ability to work independently or within a team environment. Working knowledge of GIS concepts, including experience with ArcGIS Pro, Spatial Analyst, digital orthoimagery, and cartographic standards is required. Applicants will be required to perform tasks in an outdoor environment, including GPS data collection, resource and asset mapping, and other field work. Assists the Parks Division in the geospatial support of park operations, emergency services, planning & development, program services, marketing & revenue, and shared services. Occasional in-state travel may be required. Applicants with education and/or experience in Geography, Recreation, Natural Resources, or related fields are preferred.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Geospatial Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field is required.
  • Experience with spatial analysis techniques, geospatial data integration, and database management.
  • Strong understanding of cartographic principles, map design, and production.
  • Knowledge of spatial databases (e.g., PostGIS, SQL Server Spatial, Oracle Spatial) and data management practices.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing data and tools for image processing.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants with education and/or experience in Geography, Recreation, Natural Resources, or related fields are preferred.
  • Competence in using programming languages (e.g., Python, R, or similar) for geospatial analysis and automation is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, process, and analyze spatial and non-spatial data from various sources to support GIS projects and initiatives.
  • Conduct spatial analysis to interpret and derive meaningful insights from geospatial data for use in decision-making processes.
  • Utilize GIS software tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms) to analyze spatial patterns, trends, and relationships within data.
  • Create high-quality maps for presentations, reports, and other uses, ensuring clarity and accuracy in map design.
  • Develop and maintain geospatial databases, ensuring data integrity, consistency, and security.
  • Manage spatial data layers, updating and refining datasets to ensure accurate and timely information is available for analysis.
  • Integrate various data types (e.g., satellite imagery, aerial photography, topographic data) into GIS systems.
  • Use GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth, etc.) to analyze, visualize, and present spatial data effectively.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest GIS software updates and technological advances to improve workflow and data accuracy.
  • Perform geospatial modeling and simulation to predict outcomes based on spatial data and analysis.
  • Develop clear, concise, and visually effective data visualizations to support analytical findings, reports, and presentations.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other documentation to communicate GIS findings to various stakeholders, including government officials, planners, and the public.
  • Present complex GIS data and analysis to non-technical stakeholders in an understandable way.
