GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:Creates and maintains Geographic Information System (GIS) data, custom Python/ArcPy scripts, custom reports, geodatabases, and tools to increase productivity and improve data integrity. Provides support to the Public Works and Development Department (PWD) and other County departments to create, analyze, and visualize GIS data in both desktop and web-based GIS mapping applications. This position requires proficiency in the use of ESRI products including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, as well as proficiency in Python/ArcPy for automating GIS analysis and outputs. This position requires technical expertise to develop and administer high-quality GIS projects, workflows, and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of GIS principles, spatial data management, geodatabases, and ESRI software including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of SQL and Python/ArcPy for automating GIS workflows, data processing, and analysis.
  • Knowledge and understanding of accepted statistical analysis formulas and techniques for both GIS and tabular data analysis.
  • Knowledge of GIS and cartographic principles to analyze data and produce thematic maps.
  • Ability to prepare high‑quality maps, visualizations, and web‑based mapping applications using GIS software and best practices.
  • Ability to learn and utilize department-specific systems such as Accela and adapt to new GIS technologies or tools.
  • Ability to learn state statutes and local regulations associated with assigned areas.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively in both oral and written form.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that satisfy the requirements of the job may be considered.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.
  • Possession of a valid Class “R” Colorado Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Creates, maintains, and quality-checks GIS data, provides technical GIS training and support, leads GIS projects, and develops/supports GIS applications and maps for PWD and other County departments.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements improved workflows to more effectively maintain, share, and present GIS data and analytical/cartographic outputs for PWD, other County departments, and the public.
  • Participates in project teams involved in the planning, troubleshooting, and implementation of GIS data creation, tool development, and system integrations.
  • Uses Python/ArcPy and Structured Query Language (SQL) to extract data from a variety of sources for analysis and reporting in support of PWD and other County department projects. Recommends appropriate action and strategies in response to GIS analysis.
  • Coordinates with Department staff to create and update data that identifies County-maintained roadway lane miles for annual Highway User Tax Fund (HUTF) reporting. Responsible for compiling, checking, and gaining Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) approval of annual HUTF reporting and associated documentation.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate and complete project documentation, workflows, and technical reports.
  • Prepares maps, visualizations, graphics, and web mapping applications. Maintains and updates maps, related GIS data, and metadata.
  • Develops and supports custom GIS tools and scripts including using Python/ArcPy to improve efficiency and ensure replicability.
