About The Position

This position is for a Girls Basketball Head Coach for the 2026-2027 school year, with the season running from November 30, 2026, to February 19, 2027. The coach is expected to promote positive values like loyalty, leadership, dedication, integrity, physical fitness, sportsmanship, cooperation, and personal responsibility. A key focus is on building a strong culture aligned with core values for the basketball program within the highly competitive Merrimack Valley Conference. Responsibilities include implementing codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents, developing appropriate training programs and practice sessions, and ensuring proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of athletic equipment and uniforms. The coach will travel with student-athletes to and from games, demonstrate knowledge of basketball strategies and rules, and adhere to district financial policies. Other duties involve working with athletic trainers to complete injury reports, maintaining necessary records and statistics, ensuring proper forms (physical, attendance, parent consent, medical information) are collected, and enforcing school policies and student handbook rules. The coach is also responsible for supervising student behavior from arrival to departure, both on and off the field, including locker rooms, buses, practices, and at home and away games, while maintaining a safe environment and facilities. The role requires attendance at annual Head Coach and all Coaches meetings, annual review of the HHS Coaches Handbook, and signing the Massachusetts Anti-Hazing Law Form. Requirements

  • Proven ability to advocate the importance of education and school community.
  • Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects and procedures pertinent to basketball including rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
  • Proven ability to work in a professional and friendly manner with various contingencies; i.e. students, teachers, parents, administrators, boosters, media, officials and the school community and public.
  • Valid Driver’s License - required
  • First Aid/CPR - required

Nice To Haves

  • Successful previous experience as a basketball player or coach
  • Basketball coaching experience
  • MIAA Coaches Certification

Responsibilities

  • Promote by example loyalty, leadership, dedication, integrity, physical fitness, sportsmanship, cooperation and personal responsibility.
  • Focus on building a strong culture aligned with core values for the basketball program in the highly competitive Merrimack Valley Conference.
  • Implements codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents of the HHS basketball team.
  • Ability to work the expected hours to include arriving prior to the student athlete arrival and departure times.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of game and competition rules and has the ability to educate all coaches and student-athletes to share in that understanding, including the rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
  • Develops appropriate training programs and practice sessions.
  • Ensure the proper cleaning, storage and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms are adhered to in conjunction with the Athletic Director.
  • Travels with student-athletes on the team bus both to and from games.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of strategies and rules of basketball.
  • Adheres to all financial policies of the district in the regards to the collection, disbursement of money, expenses and receipts.
  • Works with the athletic trainer(s) and completes injury reports for any student injured within 24 hours even if the athlete does not see a physician.
  • Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork and required team and individual statistics in a specified time and manner.
  • Works with the Athletic Department staff to ensure the proper forms including physical, attendance, parent consent and medical information is collected prior to the start of the season.
  • Enforces the policies and procedures of the Haverhill School Committee and the Haverhill High School Student Handbook.
  • Supervises appropriate behavior of students from arrival to departure, both on and off the field, including the locker room, buses, practices, and at home and away games.
  • Maintains a safe environment and facilities for all student athletes at all times.
  • Attends the annual HHS Head Coach meeting.
  • Attends the annual HHS all Coaches meeting.
  • Reviews the HHS Coaches Handbook annually.
  • Reviews and signs the Massachusetts Anti-Hazing Law Form annually.
  • Demonstrated commitment to protect student athletes from inappropriate conduct.
  • Proven ability to enforce all rules in all sport-related activities and venues.
  • Reports to the Head Coach, Athletic Director and Haverhill High School Principal any disciplinary issues immediately.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Athletic Director, Principal and the Superintendent of Schools and/or his/her designee.
