This individual will serve a key function in assigning field staff and technicians to oversee field investigations and construction observation activities, managing field equipment and implementing equipment maintenance procedures for the Northern California offices. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic group of engineering professions on a wide variety of challenging project types ranging from high-rises, stadiums and arenas to multi-family, logistics, and alternative energy projects.

Requirements

H.S. diploma or equivalency certificate required. An Associate’s degree or college courses in science, engineering or related fields is strongly preferred.
Minimum 10 years’ experience working as a geotechnical field engineer or technician and with geotechnical engineering field equipment and instruments.
Portable nuclear gauge certification and HAZWOPER certification required
Knowledge of geotechnical regulatory protocols
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical, multitasking, and judgment capabilities
Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment
Ability to perform basic project management tasks
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Bluebeam Revu.
Ability to visit project sites in California to observe and test geotechnical aspects of construction as needed, and for job-site training of staff
Ability to work during evenings and weekends, when needed
Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing

Responsibilities

Assign field staff and technicians to oversee field investigations and construction observation activities, for projects managed from Northern California offices. Work with management to assign staff efficiently and provide coverage to all Northern California field projects.
Coordinate with personnel in other offices to optimize staffing utilization, including finding opportunities for Northern California staff to work in the field for other offices and sourcing field personnel in other offices to staff Northern California projects.
In conjunction with project-specific managers, provide site-specific office and in-field training to staff and technicians for field investigation and construction observation and testing tasks. Maintain records of project-specific training and experience received by staff and technicians.
As needed, perform part-time on-site geotechnical observations and tests during construction and provide detailed written and verbal up-to-date project site reports to management, including standard logs and field forms, field investigation dailies, and chain of custody logs.
Manage the nuclear gauge radiation safety program for Northern California offices as the Alternate Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO), including ensuring compliance with regulations, maintaining records, and training personnel.
Manage and optimize Northern California field equipment inventory. Coordinate with staff and project managers in Northern California offices to establish and implement equipment maintenance procedures.
Maintain the Bay Area offices’ geotechnical soil sample off-site and on-site storage facilities and geotechnical equipment rooms, including overseeing proper disposal of soil samples as needed.
Assist with interviewing and hiring of field technicians and entry-level staff engineers.
Manage projects in construction, including briefing field staff, reviewing field dailies, reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and writing construction summaries and special inspection letters
Perform project management tasks for projects in construction, including developing task and project budgets and schedules, preparing progress reports, reviewing project billings, preparing draft change orders and invoices, and assisting with payment collections.
Actively participate in Langan’s Health and Safety training and have a strong commitment to health and safety in the workplace and field. This role may include being Langan’s Bay Area Health & Safety liaison.
Demonstrate professionalism at all times and communicate clearly and effectively when conversing and transmitting information to contractors, subcontractors, staff, project managers, supervisors, and others.
Interact and build strong relationships with contractor and/or subcontractor representatives. Demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service and responsiveness to client needs.
Assist other work groups within the same or different discipline or office locations on an as-needed basis.
Perform other duties as requested.
