Reporting to the Geotechnical Engineering Manager, this position will provide exposure to geotechnical engineering studies, applicable regulations, and permitting requirements. More information on NewRange is available at https://newrangecoppernickel.com/ Job Summary Reporting to the Geotechnical Engineering Manager, the Geotechnical Engineering Intern is responsible for assisting with geotechnical investigations, field sampling, data analysis, and report preparation to support tailings related geotechnical engineering projects while gaining hands-on experience with site assessments and regulatory compliance. Requirements

  • Must be working towards an Undergraduate degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering, or similar, on a full-time basis.
  • Must be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate level.
  • Must be a motivated self-starter, with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Must be comfortable working in a dynamic work environment with a willingness to work outdoors and able to operate vehicles at our operations, in various weather conditions and terrain.
  • Acceptable driving record with a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with a capability to communicate complex ideas to all levels and partners.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Ability to take initiative in proactively completing job duties.
  • This position requires the ability to perform field-based work in varying outdoor environments and weather conditions.
  • The Intern must be capable of standing and walking for extended periods; bending, kneeling, and climbing on uneven terrain; and safely lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to approximately 40–50 pounds.
  • The role may involve working at active construction sites, drilling locations, or confined spaces, and require sufficient manual dexterity, visual acuity, and stamina to operate field instruments, collecting samples, and accurately record data.

Responsibilities

  • Tailings Management: Perform dam safety inspections and assist with GISTM documentation and implementation to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Hydrological & Mass Balance Analysis: Perform water and mass balance analyses to support legacy and future tailings projects.
  • Technical Design Support: Assist the Geotechnical Engineering Manager with various design projects, contributing technical expertise to engineering plans.
  • Site Monitoring: Track and interpret geotechnical instrumentation, weather data, ground movement, and piezometric data to manage critical risks.
  • Drilling & Mapping: Assist with geotechnical drilling observations, conduct site mapping, and perform sampling activities to characterize subsurface conditions.
  • Instrumentation Maintenance: Ensure the integrity of monitoring systems through regular maintenance, data centralization, and document control.
  • Survey Integration: Conduct survey data collection and implementation to maintain accurate spatial records of site conditions.
  • Process Improvement: Evaluate innovative technologies and ideas to enhance operational efficiency and business practices.
  • Risk Management: Maintain rigorous standards for critical geotechnical risk management, ensuring all activities align with safety protocols.
  • Operational Reporting: Manage departmental logs and data tracking to support long-term site stability and reporting requirements.
  • Flexible Support: Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet operational needs.
