About The Position

The General Manager of Rental has full accountability for the leadership, performance, and profitability of the company’s rental division. This role owns rental sales execution, fleet strategy, operational excellence, and financial results while maximizing return on the company’s largest asset base. The General Manager of Rental ensures the rental business is aligned with market demand, delivers a best-in-class customer experience, and supports long-term growth objectives. This position leads rental sales, fleet operations, yard operations, and administrative functions, and partners closely with equipment sales, service, parts, and executive leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Sales, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in rental operations, fleet management, rental sales, or sales management.
  • Demonstrated success managing P&L responsibility within an asset-intensive business.
  • Proven leader with strong coaching, development, and accountability skills.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to manage budgets, KPIs, and profitability drivers.
  • Highly analytical with sound judgment and data-driven decision-making capabilities.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CRM/ERP systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide enterprise-level leadership and direction for the rental division, setting clear performance expectations and accountability.
  • Develop and execute rental strategy to maximize utilization, revenue growth, margin, and return on assets.
  • Drive continuous improvement across processes, systems, reporting, and operational efficiency.
  • Partner with executive leadership and equipment sales management to align rental strategy with overall business objectives.
  • Recruit, develop, and lead high-performing rental, fleet, and operations teams.
  • Own and manage the rental division P&L, including revenue, expenses, margins, and capital efficiency.
  • Establish, monitor, and manage to key performance indicators such as utilization, revenue per unit, margins, and customer satisfaction.
  • Review and approve expenses, vendor invoices, commissions, and month-end financial reporting.
  • Develop and execute pricing strategies informed by utilization data, market conditions, and competitive analysis.
  • Proactively minimize customer disputes through disciplined execution and rapid resolution.
  • Lead and oversee all rental sales activities and processes.
  • Support the sales organization in opportunity qualification, quoting, contract execution, and deal structure.
  • Review weekly sales activity, analyze lost opportunities, and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure rental rates are competitive, consistent, and aligned with profitability objectives.
  • Approve and coordinate machine demonstrations and customer loaner programs.
  • Ensure a consistently high level of customer satisfaction through equipment availability, reliability, and service support.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the rental fleet, including acquisition, configuration, maintenance, redeployment, and disposition.
  • Determine optimal fleet mix, specifications, and inventory levels based on utilization trends and market demand.
  • Lead all rental equipment acquisition decisions using data-driven forecasting and return analysis.
  • Partner with service departments to ensure preventative maintenance, repair quality, and rapid turnaround.
  • Approve all fleet service work and manage downtime to maximize equipment availability.
  • Conduct regular fleet audits, loss prevention initiatives, and inventory reconciliation across all locations.
  • Oversee logistics, freight, and equipment movement between branches, customers, and external yards.
  • Ensure accurate, efficient, and consistent execution of all rental operations.
  • Lead rental coordination functions including contract setup, billing accuracy, machine availability, logistics, and customer communication.
  • Oversee yard operations including check-in/check-out, condition reporting, cleaning, repairs, and asset tracking.
  • Ensure timely delivery and pickup of rental equipment.
  • Maintain accurate rental contracts, lease agreements, movement reports, and system records.
  • Coordinate with service departments on open work orders, customer damage, and equipment readiness.
  • Ensure disciplined system utilization and data accuracy across ERP, CRM, and fleet management platforms.
