About The Position

The General Maintenance Mechanic, Lead, reporting to a Shop Superintendent, is responsible for leading the team of General Maintenance Mechanics (GMM) in Housing Maintenance Services (HMS). This position provides a lead role in the work of repairs and maintenance of equipment, plumbing, physical structure, electrical wiring, and fixtures of university housing. This position requires driving University vehicles and/or golf carts. Housing & Residential Life (Housing), a self-funded auxiliary housed in the Student Affairs division of the University of Arizona, operates 23 student dorms and one Graduate apartment complex that house 7,800 students annually on the University of Arizona Main Campus. Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, Apprenticeship program, technical training experience required.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Knowledge of building and equipment maintenance/repair techniques.
  • Skill in applying building and equipment maintenance/repair technique.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and repair of heating/cooling fan coil units.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Housing & Residential Life is a security sensitive department, and this position requires a finger-print criminal background check.
  • Motor Vehicle Division check.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years lead/supervisory experience, preferably in the related work setting.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Word/Outlook, Excel, Microsoft Project.
  • Five years general maintenance experience in a large residential environment, i.e., dorms, halls, apartments, hotels, etc.
  • Familiarity with NEC, UBC and UFC codes.
  • Floor coverings and wall base treatments (VCT, carpet, and ceramic tile), installation, repairs, and maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and supervises activities of GMM crew and student workers.
  • Coordinates and assigns projects and "TMA" work tickets to subordinates in the performance of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, carpentry and painting repair and maintenance.
  • Inspects the work of others and initiates corrective measures to meet established HMS standards.
  • Determines material and parts to perform to workload, responsible for ordering parts for his or her area, the ability to give labor estimates.
  • Provides material purchase needs to GMM crew, maintains, and controls a material inventory for their area building needs, processes invoices and paperwork for supplies and equipment.
  • Repairs, replaces and/or installs a wide range of building items; including but not limited to windows, doors, screens, casement furnishings, floor coverings, ceramic tile, electrical fixtures, appliances, plumbing fixtures, window coverings, and other items typical to large residential environments.
  • Performs general painting, plumbing and carpentry repairs; including, unstopping plumbing fixtures, resetting electrical circuit breakers, replacing ballasts, minor furniture repair, caulking and paint touch up.
  • Repairs HVAC fan coils including but not limited to motors, speed switches, coil fin cleaning and filters.
  • Performs inspections including but not limited to security lights, doors, and fire extinguishers.
  • Performs facility inspections including but not limited to "TMA" work request, building condition and outside grounds condition.
  • Communicates with vendors, Housing & Residential staff members and student residents on status of work requests and related needs.
  • Operates HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) as needed.
  • Assists with various departmental activities during the August student move-in process.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Housing & Residential Life and University goals and objectives.
