About The Position

The General Counsel is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team responsible for providing legal guidance on all employment-related matters across our clinical and non-clinical workforce and will focus on employment law compliance and HR risk mitigation.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum 5 years of employment law experience, ideally with exposure to behavioral healthcare, nonprofit, or healthcare sectors.
  • Familiarity with FMLA, FLSA, ADA, Title VII, and other federal and state labor laws; experience with healthcare-related employment issues (e.g., background checks, credentialing, workforce licensing, behavioral health confidentiality laws) is highly valued.
  • Prior supervisory or mentoring experience required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative working style, particularly when dealing with clinical and HR partners.
  • Strong legal writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience advising behavioral health or healthcare organizations.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and their implications for workforce management.
  • Experience managing outside counsel for employment litigation or labor matters.

Responsibilities

  • Advise HR, leadership, and clinical management teams on a wide range of employment law matters, including discipline and discharge, FMLA/ADA leave, wage and hour compliance, licensure and credentialing implications, and workplace safety (OSHA).
  • Draft, review, and maintain employee handbooks, job descriptions, and employment-related agreements (e.g., offer letters, severance agreements, non-compete/confidentiality agreements).
  • Support regulatory compliance and workforce-related audits (e.g., COA, CMS, Medicaid, state licensing boards) from a labor/employment law perspective.
  • Manage workplace investigations related to harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and other sensitive personnel issues.
  • Respond to claims, charges, and investigations from federal and state agencies including the EEOC, DOL, and state departments of health or labor.
  • Supervise and support a team of employment-focused legal professionals (paralegal, HR compliance staff), ensuring accurate work product, legal research, and timely reporting.
  • Collaborate with internal HR and clinical leadership to ensure workforce policies align with both labor law and behavioral health best practices.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of staff and leadership training on topics such as harassment prevention, leave rights, and professional conduct.
  • Monitor developments in employment law and behavioral health regulations, and ensure organizational practices are updated accordingly.
