About The Position

First Connect Insurance Services is a digital platform providing independent insurance agents access to top US carriers and the optionality necessary to grow their businesses. Agents can work with over 130 carriers, selling various insurance policies, including home, auto, small business, and more. We’re on a mission to overhaul the technology agents have access to, putting consumer-grade software at their fingertips. We’ve got thousands of active agents with hundreds joining monthly, and we plan to accelerate our growth. First Connect is seeking a General Counsel, who will provide hands-on legal services, advice, guidance, and counsel to First Connect. As a licensed insurance agent and aggregator, First Connect has a significant operational and technological advantage over competitors. This role will partner with multiple leaders across the organization—including the CEO, CFO, VP of Carrier Relations, Director of Sales, Director of Agency Marketing Operations, and Human Resources—and serve as a strategic leader and a key decision-maker across legal, compliance, and risk matters. You’ll bring a business-oriented legal mindset, strong communication skills, and the ability to navigate a fast-moving, high-growth environment while building out legal infrastructure to scale.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree and active bar membership (California preferred)
  • 10+ years of legal experience, including significant time working in or with insurance agencies, brokers, MGAs, or carriers
  • Deep knowledge of regulatory requirements impacting insurance aggregators, Insurtech platforms, and agency/broker models
  • Broad legal experience spanning corporate law, labor law, commercial agreements, litigation, and compliance
  • Experience working with regulators and developing enterprise-wide legal strategy
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences
  • Strong business and financial acumen—comfortable navigating operational and accounting-related legal issues
  • High attention to detail, with the ability to deliver fast, pragmatic legal support in a startup environment
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate legal risks and proactively implement solutions

Responsibilities

  • Provide thoughtful, strategic legal advice in support of First Connect’s business goals
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the executive team and influence decision-making on risk, compliance, and business strategy
  • Build a collaborative, impact-oriented legal function that supports business priorities with agility and attention to detail
  • Prepare and present legal updates to the Board of Directors and executive leadership
  • Draft and manage a wide variety of contracts, including carrier agreements, B2B agreements, data sharing agreements, and a high volume of NDAs
  • Oversee the contract intake, review, and retention process using a scalable contract management system
  • Identify and mitigate key contract risks related to licensing, indemnity, privacy, and product compliance
  • Serve as First Connect’s Compliance Officer, leading company-wide regulatory initiatives and managing compliance risk
  • Advise leadership on insurance regulations and licensing requirements for agents and sub-producers
  • Stay current on applicable state and federal regulations (including for both admitted and non-admitted products) and oversee regulatory change management
  • Manage tracking and response to regulatory inquiries and complaints
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to support legal aspects of new product development and innovation
  • Guide product delivery to ensure legal and regulatory compliance
  • Retain and manage external counsel for litigation or government investigations
  • Represent the company’s legal interests in dispute resolution
  • Support the Finance team in implementing legal controls for financial reporting and audits
  • Provide legal input on liabilities and work closely with auditors and risk managers
  • Establish governance policies and ensure legal compliance across all business functions
  • Support legal matters related to equity, corporate structure, and board management
