About The Position

Canterbury Court is a retirement community located in the heart of Buckhead, where we put our hearts into creating a true community. As a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, we reinvest revenue into our community for the benefit of residents and staff. We are Atlanta’s first Life Plan Community (LPC) – what some call a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). Canterbury Court is looking for a Garden Specialist to join our family. This is a full-time position located in the Plant Operations division of our Life Plan Community (LPC). The Garden Specialist must have a sincere desire to serve older adults in a high-quality continuing care setting and strive to provide excellence and consistency in our gardens while leading a team of garden assistants. Requirements

  • BS in Horticulture or related field of study.
  • Must have experience in landscaping or working with various types of plants, especially in the South.
  • Must be willing to do hands-on gardening in the dirt and work with older resident gardeners.
  • Should have an interest in ecology and plant sustainability (ecological gardening).
  • Interest in native plants and pollinators, and some knowledge of irrigation required.
  • Must be comfortable working outside in various weather conditions.
  • At least two years of experience in the landscaping field, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be able and willing to perform duties inside and outside when necessary.
  • Must possess leadership and organizational skills and the ability to accept responsibility.
  • Must be patient, honest, and possess good judgment, tact, compassion, and integrity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading a team preferred.
  • Experience visiting other gardens (e.g., Atlanta Botanical Garden, Gibbs Gardens) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all Canterbury Court gardens and assign tasks to members of the garden staff.
  • Report to landscaping company on work needing to be done (watering, weeding, etc.).
  • Attend Garden Committee meetings and communicate with the committee on a regular basis.
  • Work with resident gardeners on their independent gardens.
  • Assist with landscape maintenance, restoration, and design.
  • Transplant, prune, and fertilize small trees and shrubs using a detailed schedule.
  • Weed landscape beds and assist with mulching.
  • Identify and treat potential pests or diseases.
  • Provide plant care advice to other team members.
  • Oversee and coordinate the care of the greenhouse.
  • Keep the greenhouse and orchid house clean and organized.
