Fluid Dynamics Engineer

RivianIrvine, CA

About The Position

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract. As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations. Role Summary We are looking for a motivated Junior Fluid Dynamics Engineer to join our team and contribute to the aerodynamic development of our next-generation electric adventure vehicles. In this role, you will provide critical technical support to the aerodynamics team, moving from early-stage simulations to real-world production validation. As an entry-level engineer, you will work under the guidance of Senior and Staff engineers to balance the demands of drag reduction, lift balance, and cooling requirements with the aesthetic vision of our Design Studio. This is a hands-on role where you will transform raw fluid-dynamics data into actionable insights that help define the efficiency and capabilities of our fleet.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering; a focus on fluid dynamics or aerodynamics is preferred.
  • Experience: 0–2 years of experience (including internships or Formula Student/FSAE experience) in automotive or aerospace aerodynamics.
  • Technical Skills: Foundational knowledge of commercial CFD codes and their application to fluid flow problems.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (CATIA V6 preferred) for surface manipulation and model preparation.
  • Strong Python or MATLAB skills for data analysis and workflow automation.
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical findings to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Mindset: A "can-do" attitude with a proven track record of managing projects from concept to completion in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Simulation & Analysis: Execute advanced CFD campaigns to visualize flow structures and identify opportunities for efficiency gains.
  • Workflow Automation: Utilize scripting and data analysis tools to improve simulation post-processing and turnaround times.
  • Design Support: Collaborate with the Design team and senior engineers to provide data-driven feedback on surface development and styling intent.
  • Testing & Validation: Assist in planning and executing wind tunnel test programs, including preparing models, bucks, and prototype vehicles.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Support integrating aerodynamic goals with the Thermal, NVH, Dynamics and Range teams to ensure holistic vehicle performance.
  • Data Communication: Assist in the preparation of technical reports and presentations that distill complex phenomena for cross-functional partners.
