About The Position

Stepp’s Towing & Heavy Transport, a family-owned business since 1960, proudly serves the greater Tampa Bay and Orlando areas. We specialize in light-, medium-, and heavy-duty towing, heavy transport, and auto salvage. Our team is committed to excellence, safety, and supporting our community. Position Overview The Shop Manager plays a key role in our business, caring for all our various-sized trucks, tractors, and trailers, along with our internal customers (our Professional Drivers), and ensuring the safe, legal, and reliable operation of equipment to achieve our company objective of consistently providing quality customer experience. This position requires prior shop management experience. This is a full-time, salaried role with one of the most successful privately held towing and heavy haul companies in the country, and pay is commensurate with prior experience.

Requirements

  • Must possess a minimum of 8+ years of fleet shop management experience with a minimum fleet size of 100+ assets within the auto/diesel industry.
  • Must have strong management skills along with the ability to identify each employee’s strong suits and assign projects to each mechanic based on their abilities.
  • Prior technician/mechanic experience is required
  • Must be familiar with light, medium, and heavy truck/tractor/trailer repair and maintenance
  • Must be a goal-oriented leader who thrives in a fast-paced, challenging environment.
  • Must be able to multitask, prioritize, and delegate jobs to ensure all repairs are completed most efficiently and effectively.
  • Thorough knowledge of truck, tractor, and trailer maintenance, and DOT rules and regulations.
  • Must have problem-solving skills and good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.), including a working knowledge of various diagnostic software for Cummins, Paccar, & Cat engines.
  • Should be familiar with welding and fabricating.

  • Class A CDL is strongly preferred.
  • Samsara knowledge is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Managing and coordinating daily activities within the maintenance shop.
  • Responsibility for leading, preparing, and scheduling daily work assignments for shop mechanics to maximize efficiency and minimize costs and asset downtime.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting problems with vehicles and equipment.
  • Working closely throughout the day with internal Operations management to ensure all priorities are considered in work scheduling and goals.
  • Maintaining and controlling shop parts inventory.
  • Maintenance of a mix of light, medium, and heavy-duty towing trucks, both diesel and gas, including hydraulics and cylinders, as well as heavy haul tractors and trailers.
  • Maintaining accurate real-time inventory of all assigned fleet units, including their physical location and operational readiness.
  • Maintaining the equipment PM program.
  • Monitoring employee performance.
  • Maintaining a focus on cost control and time management by monitoring and analyzing all opportunities to cut costs and improve efficiencies, including providing recommendations on fleet utilization and replacement.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe work area in compliance with Company and OSHA standards as well as with all applicable laws/regulations.
  • Identifying and monitoring equipment sent to outside sources for repairs.
  • Maintaining a high standard of quality control for all repairs.
  • Completing required fleet maintenance paperwork or computer entry associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
  • Preparing management reports as required, including daily reporting of units out of service.
  • Overseeing and/or performing required FMCSA Annual Inspections on all equipment and maintaining files to the DOT standards, including DVIR and 90-day inspections.
  • Additional duties as assigned
