Mechanical Component Engineer- This position may sit at any SNC site and will report up through Birmingham. This position is post from an exempt level 06-07. Mechanical Component Engineer (Corporate) JOB SUMMARY: Southern Nuclear Operating Company’s corporate Fleet Plant Support Department provides support for the Southern Nuclear Fleet. We are seeking an experienced engineer that will be responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance in mechanical components on the secondary side of the plant, particularly for Condensate and Feedwater Systems with working knowledge of Extraction Steam and Heater Drains. The successful candidate should have experience with mechanical components, nuclear site processes, and an understanding of industry performance and regulations is a plus. Experience with the Balance of Plant (BOP) for power plants is required, including knowledge of thermal performance. Activities include setting strategic long-term direction, implementing industry best practices, developing/maintaining fleet procedures, participating and leading in industry working groups, outage support, and troubleshooting complex problems. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education Requirements Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or university, or Professional Engineer license, is required. (Engineering Technology will not be accepted). Experience: The position will be filled as either a level 6 or 7 depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and expertise. A strong technical background in engineering and working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements related to nuclear power generating facilities. Four (4) years of experience with systems and components is required, including an understanding of thermal efficiency/performance. Examples of systems and component include: Condensate and Feedwater Systems Extraction Steam and Heater Drains Systems Condensate Pumps, Condensate Booster Pumps, Feedwater pumps, Feedwater Isolation Valves, Feedwater Flow Control Valves, Feedwater Heaters, Moisture Separators, Moisture Separator Reheaters, Steam Jet Air Ejectors, Level Control Valves Six (6) or more years of experience is preferred in the areas outlined above. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to solve problems and make sound engineering judgments, based on experience and proper application of industry practices, in order to provide timely and appropriate resolutions to mechanical component issues that might impact plant output, operation, or safety. Expertise to address operational, maintenance, and reliability issues for mechanical components. Ability to develop long range plans and strategies for maintaining or replacing equipment to ensure reliable and economical operation and maintenance of the mechanical components. Ability to communicate technical issues and drive problem resolution through various levels of management at the plant sites and corporate office. Ability to work effectively across diverse groups at the plant sites and corporate office to drive implementation of standard technical solutions to mechanical system/component issues. Experience and knowledge to technically interface with vendors and service suppliers on procurement, repair plan development, troubleshooting, and resolving equipment performance problems. Ability to ensure SNC stays abreast of emerging issues and technological developments in mechanical components, to work closely with site engineering, maintenance, operations, and work control personnel by providing expertise for assigned components and systems. The ability to assist in the development of engineering specifications for mechanical components. Ability to initiate, coordinate and oversee multiple complex projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Ability to adapt to changing demands and priorities. Ability to use good judgment and make sound engineering and business decisions. Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with counterparts at each nuclear plant site. Excellent written and oral communications skills. Ability to be a team player with emphasis on team contribution. Self-starter who performs tasks with little supervision or oversight. Maintain unescorted access to all SNC facilities. The Engineer is responsible for establishing the appropriate metrics/methods to ascertain mechanical component performance, develop improvement plans, provide the technical basis for system and component improvements, assist in problem solving/troubleshooting initiatives, supporting fleet initiatives such as subsequent license renewal and Extended Power Uprates, and providing specific technical subject matter expertise to the nuclear plant Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance groups as necessary.
