About The Position

Ice Harbor Dam is located on the lower Snake River in Washington State, members at the Fish Facility would assist with collection and identification of juvenile salmonids that are diverted around the dam into the Juvenile Fish Facility. Collected fish are assessed for injuries and general health condition before being released back into the river. Members would also assist with monitoring adult fish ladders and conducting visual counts of birds upriver and downriver of the dam. The primary goals of the Fish Facility are to monitor and ensure as high of survival rate as possible of juvenile fish migrating down river to the ocean and to ensure adults are able to travel upriver to their spawning grounds.

Requirements

  • Members must be able to drive utility vehicle safely
  • be able to lift 50lbs of weight
  • walk the length of the dam (roughly 1/4 mile)
  • be able to go up and down extended flights of stairs that traverse the dam's height.
  • The dam is located approximately 20-30 minute drive from the nearest city, so a vehicle is highly recommended.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding how to use species identification guides is recommended, but on-site training will also be given particularly with regard to species that will be encountered in fish condition sampling periods.

Responsibilities

  • During the juvenile fish passage season (spring through mid-summer) fish are collected and monitored for overall condition, samples are collected twice per week and usually take up half of a working day.
  • Throughout the entire year, adult fish ladders and associated equipment are visually monitored at least 3 times per week, members would report the results of these inspections and work in Excel to record the result for long term documentation.
  • Counting and monitoring of piscivorous birds that congregate upstream and downstream of the dam. Making recommendations to start additional bird deterrent efforts if numbers increase.
  • Assisting in recovery of fish from any area of the dam that is being dewatered for maintenance.
  • Assisting fish facility maintenance staff with routine maintenance tasks.
