About The Position

Employee is responsible for performing fiscal control and governmental accounting work associated with preparing, maintaining and processing accounting records and financial transactions. Responsibilities could include but are not limited to maintaining accounting records concerning receipt, expenditures, and balance of local, state, and federal funds. Performs verification, reconciliation, analysis, and report presentation on accounting matters. Records transactions in journals, ledgers, and special forms. Prepares monthly and other reports on activities. Maintains and updates various financial reports, records, account analysis, and transaction summaries. Maintains accurate files of bills. Processes and pays administrative bills. Receipts, posts, and disburses monies in Special Welfare accounts. Collects and accounts for monies. Prepares and processes payroll twice a month. Mails and distributes accounts payable checks. Confers with vendors to resolve discrepancies. The Fiscal Assistant III class is distinguished from the Fiscal Assistant Supervisor by the latter’s having supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the application of established bookkeeping and accounting principles and techniques to governmental accounting transactions
  • Considerable knowledge of general clerical and administrative practices and procedures
  • Working knowledge of state and local government fiscal regulations, policies and procedures, and office accounting methods and procedures
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and associated business and agency software, including spreadsheets, calculators, and other office machines
  • Demonstrates the ability to organize and effectively process and maintain financial records and files and prepare reports from them; analyze and record information and balance figures; understand or apply laws, regulations, and policies to the maintenance of financial records; verify documents and forms for accuracy and completeness; type accurately at good speed; exercise independent judgment, discretion and initiative in completing assignments and in dealing with other employees and the general public; communicating effectively orally and in writing with customers/vendors; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • High school diploma supplemented with bookkeeping/accounting coursework and related fiscal support experience using business and agency software to include spreadsheets or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, or abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Current or previous Department of Social Services fiscal experience.
  • Advanced certificate or Associates Degree in Bookkeeping/Accounting.
