About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's department of Facilities Management is searching for a Fire/Life Safety Technician. Working under the Life Safety Supervisor, you will be responsible for all aspects of fire and life safety systems, from design and construction to maintenance and repair. This includes ensuring all work meets University standards and applicable NFPA codes. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting work environment. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience with fire and life safety code compliance, service, and maintenance across a broad range of systems.
  • At least one (1) year of experience inspecting fire and life safety systems.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 80, NFPA 72, and NFPA 25.
  • Successful Background Check
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license (or equivalent for out-of-state applicants) required - Motor Vehicle Records check conducted annually
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol screen
  • Fitness for duty assessment and pre-employment medical exam
  • Child Protective Clearance - Act 153
  • Valid PA driver's license
  • Position requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends in response to emergencies or operational needs.
  • Ability to move and work in tight spaces, up and down ladders and to work from ladders with frequent walking and extended standing.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds from ground to overhead.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in an institutional or educational environment preferred.
  • Experience with IBC codes and NFPA standards preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts daily checks of life safety systems.
  • Coordinate support as required to maintain proper system operation.
  • Coordinate the scheduled Inspection, Testing and Maintenance (ITM) of various life safety systems work performed by contractors, including necessary repairs.
  • Install, and oversee fire and life safety systems for new construction and renovation projects, ensuring compliance with university standards and codes.
  • Manage work orders, investigate issues and set priorities.
  • Oversee contractor performance, review invoices, and manage costs for services related to fire hydrants, extinguishers, alarms, detectors, ANSUL systems, and other life safety equipment.
  • Research, recommend, and procure materials and systems to ensure compliance with local, state, federal, and ADA requirements.
  • Develop and maintain alarm codes, train staff in system use, and coordinate required drills and system tests with the Fire Marshal and local inspectors.
  • Attend staff meetings with Facilities Management Services and participate in problem-solving and project-related discussions.
  • Maintain accurate records, respond to service requests, and provide timely communication on system issues.
  • Complete work utilizing various software programs.
  • Stay current on technology, codes, and industry standards to ensure continuous system reliability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
